Concrete placement at low temperatures poses special challenges for construction companies. Falling temperatures slow down the hydration of the cement and thus the development of concrete strength. This often leads to longer formwork removal times and can significantly impact the construction schedule. At very low temperatures, there is also a risk that the curing of the concrete will come to a near standstill.

In addition to extended construction times, cold weather conditions can also compromise the quality of the concrete. If fresh concrete freezes before reaching sufficient early strength, there is a risk of permanent damage to the concrete structure. Furthermore, temperature differences between the core and edge areas of a structural element can cause stresses that lead to cracking. Pouring concrete against frozen subgrade, formwork, or structural elements also increases the risk of frost damage. Furthermore, at low temperatures, the bond between the concrete and the reinforcement may develop inadequately.

To ensure the required concrete quality, various national standards and regulations prescribe appropriate protective and curing measures. These include, among other things, the use of special winter concrete mixes, the preheating of raw materials, the covering of exposed concrete surfaces, and the use of heated forms or enclosures. However, these measures often increase the organizational effort and project costs.

One key challenge remains: The condition of the concrete inside the formwork can only be assessed to a limited extent. Temperature trends and strength development are often not directly visible and are therefore frequently evaluated based on assumptions or isolated measurements.

Digital sensor technologies open up new possibilities here. By continuously recording concrete temperature, temperature trends can be fully documented, and critical developments can be detected early on. In combination with calibrated maturity models, the development of concrete strength can also be tracked. This enables a well-founded assessment of the optimal time to remove the forms, as well as optimized planning of construction site operations.

Modern monitoring solutions also support the prediction of strength development while taking future weather conditions into account. This allows necessary protective measures to be planned early on and resources to be utilized more efficiently.

The use of sensor-based monitoring systems is becoming increasingly important, particularly when pouring concrete under winter conditions. Vemaventuri offers digital solutions for monitoring the temperature and curing stage of concrete, enabling the continuous collection and analysis of relevant concrete data. This allows temperature trends to be documented seamlessly and critical developments to be identified early on. At the same time, strength development can be tracked and predicted using established maturity assessment methods. This helps construction companies reduce risks, document quality in a traceable manner, and manage construction site processes more precisely.

Particularly under winter conditions, data-driven monitoring can help better determine the optimal time for protective measures, formwork removal, or other work steps. This contributes both to ensuring the quality of the structure and to greater cost-effectiveness in concrete construction projects.

With digital sensor solutions for concrete monitoring, Vemaventuri helps construction companies safely and efficiently control concrete pouring processes under various environmental conditions. Monitoring water content, formwork pressure, fill level, compaction, temperature, and curing status provides transparency regarding the condition of the concrete and offers a solid foundation for decisions regarding quality, schedule, and safety on the construction site.
