Semiconductor Manufacturing Equipment Market

Tokyo, Japan - August 25, 2026 - Japan's semiconductor revival is entering a stage where the equipment installed inside fabs may matter as much as the fabs themselves. Rapidus is moving its 2nm program from technology demonstration toward pilot-line validation, equipment implementation, yield improvement and advanced packaging, creating a new layer of demand for process, inspection and test suppliers.

Against this backdrop, DataM Intelligence estimates that the **global Semiconductor Manufacturing Equipment Market will reach US$306.61 billion by 2035, expanding at a CAGR of 7.9% during 2026-2035**. The company's latest research examines how Japan's push for advanced semiconductor manufacturing could reshape equipment procurement, supplier qualification and technology investment.

## Japan's 2nm Ambition Is Expanding the Equipment Opportunity

The commercial opportunity around Japan's semiconductor strategy extends well beyond lithography.

Rapidus announced in April 2026 that NEDO had approved its FY2026 plans and budget for 2nm semiconductor projects. The company plans to implement and verify the equipment, transport systems and production-management solutions required for its short-turnaround-time manufacturing system on the pilot line. It is also working on yield improvement and defect-density targets.

That distinction is important for equipment suppliers.

A leading-edge fab requires an interconnected ecosystem of **deposition, etch, cleaning, metrology, defect inspection, wafer handling, probing, testing and packaging equipment**. As Rapidus progresses toward its targeted 2027 mass-production start, supplier qualification and process learning become increasingly important commercial milestones.

The market opportunity, therefore, is not simply tied to the number of wafers eventually produced. It is also tied to how quickly equipment makers can help fabs move from experimental process flows to repeatable, high-yield manufacturing.

## Rapidus Is Turning Yield Learning into a Procurement Issue

One of the less-discussed aspects of Japan's 2nm program is the relationship between equipment performance and **time-to-yield**.

Rapidus says its FY2026 program will focus on improving prototype accuracy, increasing yield and implementing the equipment and production-management systems needed for short-TAT manufacturing. Its back-end program includes 2.xD and 3D packaging development, as well as chiplet package design and testing.

This creates potential demand across both front-end and back-end equipment.

For suppliers, the competitive question is increasingly: **Can the equipment shorten process qualification, identify defects earlier and provide the process data required to improve yield?**

That could favor vendors offering tightly integrated equipment, metrology and process-control capabilities rather than companies competing only on throughput.

## Japan Is Building the Supplier Ecosystem Alongside the Fabs

Japan already has a strong domestic equipment base, including **Tokyo Electron, SCREEN Holdings, Advantest, DISCO, Lasertec, Nikon, Canon, Hitachi High-Tech, KOKUSAI ELECTRIC and ULVAC**.

The current semiconductor cycle is also influencing how these companies organize R&D.

Advantest announced in March 2026 that it will establish the **Omiya Tech Hub in Saitama**, scheduled to open in the first half of fiscal 2027. The facility is intended to connect its major R&D locations, add laboratory space and strengthen access to engineering talent in the Greater Tokyo area.

For an industry where customer qualification can require close collaboration between equipment engineers and semiconductor process teams, this kind of R&D footprint matters. Japan's equipment advantage is increasingly being reinforced through proximity to customers, laboratories and specialized engineering talent.

## The Opportunity Extends Beyond Front-End Equipment

Japan's semiconductor strategy is also creating opportunities in advanced packaging and test.

Rapidus is developing 2.xD and 3D packaging technologies and chiplet packages designed for application-specific requirements. The company has also reported development of a 600mm-square panel-based organic insulating film RDL interposer.

This creates additional equipment requirements around wafer probing, inspection, packaging, bonding and final test.

The shift is particularly relevant as AI and high-performance computing increase the complexity of semiconductor packages. More advanced devices can mean more demanding test coverage, higher data volumes and greater pressure to detect defects before expensive downstream processing.

## Japan's Policy Support Is Changing the Investment Equation

Japan's semiconductor strategy is not being built solely through private-sector investment. METI's policy framework includes support for domestic advanced-semiconductor production, post-5G semiconductor R&D and supply-chain resilience, covering both semiconductor manufacturing and equipment/component ecosystems.

Rapidus also completed a **¥267.6 billion funding round in February 2026**, including ¥100 billion from the Information-Technology Promotion Agency of Japan. The funding is intended to help the company progress from R&D toward 2nm mass production.

For equipment manufacturers and component suppliers, this creates a longer procurement window extending from pilot-line development into production qualification.
