New TEDx Talk Warns That Sudden Wealth Can Be More Dangerous Than Poverty Without Financial Preparation
Financial advisor, author, and University of Virginia professor Tom Henske says today's NIL era reveals a financial lesson every family should understand.
WESTPORT, Conn. - August 24, 2026 - Most people spend years learning how to earn money. Few ever learn how to handle it once it arrives.
That is the central message of "Sudden Wealth Syndrome," a new TEDx Talk by financial advisor, author, and University of Virginia professor Tom Henske, CFP®, released today on YouTube.
Drawing on nearly three decades of experience advising families, executives, entrepreneurs, business owners, and professional athletes, Henske challenges one of society's biggest financial assumptions: that more money automatically leads to a better life.
"The problem isn't sudden wealth," said Henske. "The problem is that we prepare people to make money but rarely prepare them to manage the opportunities, responsibilities, and emotions that come with it."
While the talk explores the explosion of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) compensation in college athletics, Henske says the message applies far beyond sports. Whether it's a young athlete signing a six-figure endorsement deal, an entrepreneur selling a business, a family receiving an inheritance, or an employee benefiting from stock options, sudden financial success can create life-changing decisions that few people are prepared to make.
Rather than focusing solely on investing or budgeting, Henske introduces a practical framework for slowing down before making major financial decisions. The talk encourages viewers to "master the pause" by creating space between receiving money and spending it, allowing time to develop a thoughtful plan, seek trusted guidance, and make decisions that support long-term goals instead of short-term emotions.
"As parents, we spend years teaching our children how to succeed," Henske said. "We should spend just as much time teaching them what to do when success finally arrives."
Henske is the founder of Total Cents, an organization dedicated to helping parents teach their children about money through simple, engaging financial education. He is also the founder of Athlete Edge, a financial education platform designed to help colleges prepare student-athletes for the financial realities of the modern NIL era and life after sports.
A CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® professional with more than 28 years of experience, Henske is the author of It Makes Total Cents and teaches personal finance at the University of Virginia. A former NCAA soccer All-American and three-time national champion at UVA, he has spent his career helping individuals and families build confidence in their financial decisions while advancing financial literacy through education.
The TEDx Talk, "Sudden Wealth Syndrome," is now available on YouTube.
