Stainless Steel Mechanical Properties Guide: Tensile Strength, Yield Strength and Hardness Explained
Shanghai, China - August 21, 2026 - Stainless Steel Mechanical Properties Guide: Tensile Strength, Yield Strength and Hardness Explained as below.Image: https://www.sakysteel.com/uploads/SAKY-STEEL-21.jpg
Stainless steel mechanical properties depend on more than the grade name.
Heat treatment, cold work, product form, size and delivery condition can all affect the final values.
For industrial buyers, tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and hardness should be reviewed together.
Quick Answer
- Tensile strength shows the maximum stress a material can withstand during a tensile test before fracture.
- Yield strength indicates the stress level where permanent deformation begins.
- Elongation gives useful information about ductility.
- Hardness measures resistance to indentation or local deformation.
- The same stainless steel grade can show different values in different delivery conditions.

Tensile Strength vs Yield Strength vs Hardness
PROPERTY
WHAT IT MEANS
WHY BUYERS CARE
Tensile Strength
Maximum engineering stress reached during a tensile test
Useful for comparing overall strength capability
Yield Strength
Stress at which specified permanent deformation begins
Important for structural and pressure-related design
Elongation
Measure of extension before fracture
Helps assess ductility and forming behavior
Hardness
Resistance to indentation under a specified test method
Useful for wear, machining and heat-treatment verification
These values describe different material behaviors. A higher hardness value does not automatically mean better performance for every application.
How Common Stainless Steel Grades Differ
Different stainless steel families are designed for different combinations of corrosion resistance, strength, hardness and ductility.
GRADE
MATERIAL FAMILY
MECHANICAL CHARACTER
TYPICAL BUYER FOCUS
304 / 304L
Austenitic
Good ductility with moderate strength
General fabrication and corrosion-resistant parts
316 / 316L
Austenitic
Good ductility with moderate strength
Chemical, marine-related and process equipment
410
Martensitic
Can achieve higher strength and hardness after suitable heat treatment
Shafts, valves and mechanical components
420
Martensitic
Higher hardness potential than common austenitic grades
Wear-resistant and hardened components
17-4PH
Precipitation hardening
High strength after specified aging treatment
High-strength shafts, valves and precision parts
Duplex 2205
Ferritic-austenitic
Higher yield strength than conventional austenitic grades
High-strength corrosion-resistant service
This table shows general material positioning. Actual acceptance values must come from the applicable product standard and delivery condition.
Why Can the Same Stainless Steel Grade Have Different Properties?
A grade name does not guarantee one fixed tensile strength or hardness value.
- Heat treatment: martensitic and precipitation-hardening grades can change significantly after treatment.
- Cold work: austenitic stainless steel can gain strength and hardness through cold deformation.
- Product form: plate, bar, wire and pipe can have different mechanical requirements.
- Size: some product standards specify different requirements according to section size.
- Delivery condition: annealed, solution-treated, hardened or aged conditions must be identified.
For example, 17-4PH can be supplied in conditions such as H900, H1025 or H1150. The resulting strength and hardness are not the same.
Cold-worked 304 can also have much higher strength than solution-annealed 304.
Understanding Stainless Steel Hardness
Several hardness scales are used for stainless steel.
Brinell hardness is commonly reported as HBW. Rockwell hardness may use HRB or HRC depending on material hardness and the required test scale. Vickers hardness is reported as HV.
These scales use different test methods.
Approximate conversion tables can be useful for reference. They should not replace the hardness method required by the material specification.
For acceptance testing, use the actual test method and scale stated in the purchase requirement.
Mechanical Testing Standards Buyers Should Know
STANDARD
MAIN PURPOSE
ASTM A370
Mechanical testing methods and definitions for steel, stainless steel and related alloy products
ASTM E8/E8M
Tension testing of metallic materials, including yield strength, tensile strength and elongation
ASTM E10
Brinell hardness testing of metallic materials
ASTM E18
Rockwell hardness testing of metallic materials
These are test-method standards. They do not by themselves define the acceptance limit for every stainless steel product.
The required values normally come from the applicable product specification, purchase order or engineering requirement.
How to Check Mechanical Properties on an MTC
An MTC should be checked against the exact product specification.
MTC ITEM
WHAT TO CHECK
Grade
Correct stainless steel grade and UNS / EN designation where applicable
Product Standard
Confirm the exact standard required by the purchase order
Heat Number
Must match the supplied material and traceability marking
Tensile Strength
Compare actual test value with the specified requirement
Yield Strength
Check the reported value and test basis required by the specification
Elongation
Check the reported ductility value and applicable specimen requirement
Hardness
Verify the test scale and acceptance requirement where applicable
Condition
Confirm annealed, solution-treated, quenched and tempered, or aged condition

Mechanical Property Selection by Application
REQUIREMENT
TYPICAL MATERIAL DIRECTION
General corrosion resistance and ductility
304 / 304L or 316 / 316L depending on environment
Higher hardness
Martensitic grades such as 410 or 420 in a suitable heat-treated condition
High strength
17-4PH in the specified aging condition
High yield strength plus corrosion resistance
Duplex 2205 may be considered
Precision shaft or machined component
Select grade and condition according to corrosion, strength and machining requirements
FAQWhat is tensile strength in stainless steel?
Tensile strength is the maximum engineering stress reached during a tensile test. It is commonly reported in MPa or ksi.
What is the difference between yield strength and tensile strength?
Yield strength relates to the onset of specified permanent deformation. Tensile strength is the maximum engineering stress reached during the tensile test.
Is harder stainless steel always stronger?
No. Hardness and tensile strength can be related, but they are different properties. Material selection should also consider ductility, toughness, corrosion resistance and service conditions.
Why does the same stainless steel grade have different mechanical properties?
Heat treatment, cold work, size, product form and delivery condition can change the measured properties. Always compare material in the correct specified condition.
What mechanical properties should I check on an MTC?
Common items include tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and hardness where required. Also confirm the product standard, heat number and delivery condition.
Conclusion
Tensile strength, yield strength and hardness describe different aspects of stainless steel performance.
No single value should be used alone to judge material suitability.
Always check the stainless steel grade, product standard and delivery condition together. For MTC review, compare the actual test results with the exact purchase specification.
