Spokane, WA, USA - August 21, 2026 - As people around the world search for deeper meaning, a clearer sense of purpose, and more authentic connection, Professor Emeritus Tom Askman brings forward a compelling invitation to look somewhere many of us have been conditioned to overlook: within.
In his new book, The Way Back to BEing, Askman explores a deceptively simple but powerful question:
What if the peace, love, and fulfillment we've spent our lives searching for, aren't found in the things we sought to acquire, achieve, or earn, but it's actually the qualities of our own nature that we have simply forgotten how to access?
It's not a question Askman was just curious about, his own life story has been the doorway that opened this wisdom to not only himself, his students, but also to the world.
Drawing upon 84 years of life, Askman describes his earlier life in words that may sound uncomfortably familiar to so many searching for happiness.
"My life was just like everyone else," Askman says, "a typical experience of being unaware of my connection to deeper meaning and overly educated in the programming of society."
By societal standards, he had taken all the right steps. He pursued his creativity, developed a respected career, and spent 54 years teaching studio art at the university level.
From the outside, there was little reason to believe anything was missing.
But on the inside, an entirely different reality existed.
"Looking from the outside, my life seemed successful and happy," Askman says, "but inside I was suffering in the worst ways."
That contradiction sits at the heart of The Way Back to Being.
Because Askman's story raises a question that reaches far beyond his own life:
What happens when you finally acquire the life you were taught to want and discover that it still cannot give you what you were actually searching for?
Askman came to recognize that much of what he had been taught about happiness had been wrong. Like millions of people, he had been conditioned to search "out there" through achievements and actions, rather than within.
This realization became the beginning of Askman's return.
Rather than offering another formula for becoming more successful, productive, spiritual, or accomplished, The Way Back to BEing examines how we become separated from ourselves in the first place, and what it takes to find our way back.
Askman explores how families, educational systems, cultural expectations, religion, advertising, media, and social media can quietly teach human beings to measure their value through external standards. Over time, those messages can become so deeply embedded that we no longer recognize them as conditioning. We simply assume they are who we are.
For anyone who has ever felt that question rising beneath an otherwise successful life, The Way Back to BEing offers a different place to begin.
Askman's journey ultimately became an exploration of how to return to our inherent capacity for love, joy, awareness, authenticity, connection, and meaning, the qualities we may have spent an entire lifetime searching for everywhere except the one place they could actually be found.
Within ourselves.
