Cardiff roofing firm urges residents to check credentials before agreeing repairs this winter.

A Cardiff roofing contractor has warned homeowners across South East Wales to be careful when dealing with doorstep traders about their roofing issues. These people target properties in the hours and days after a storm has passed and the damage is clear.

Redland Roofing Cardiff, who operate a 24-hour emergency call-out service across the city, say that the pattern repeats every autumn. For example, high winds strip tiles and lift flashing and within days unsolicited callers are knocking on local doors and offering immediate quality repairs. These are often followed by cash demands up front.

37 emergency callouts between October and February last winter, of which 12 involved homeowners who had already paid a doorstep trader.

What to watch for:

The company says that the warning signs are generally consistent:

• Unsolicited callers. Legitimate roofers don't knock on doors after storms looking for work.
• "I noticed your roof from the road." This is a common opener and is often paired with a claim of leftover materials from a nearby job.
• Pressure to decide immediately. Beware of any insistence that the work must start today because this is a definite red flag.
• Cash up front. No reputable contractor will require full payment before any work begins.
• No verifiable trace. No website for the caller, no review history, no landline, no fixed address, no mobile number only.
• Out-of-area vehicles. These storm chasers frequently travel between regions following bad weather.

What to do instead:

• Get a written quote before agreeing to anything.
• Check the company has a verifiable trading history - a website, or a review record, or a traceable address.
• Look them up on an independent trader directory where reviews cannot be edited by the trader.
• Get a second quote. Genuine emergency work can be made safe temporarily while you do this.
• Ask for proof of public liability insurance.
• Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, doorstep contracts over £42 carry a 14-day cancellation right - traders must tell you about it in writing.
• Report any concerns to Trading Standards via the Citizens Advice consumer helpline.
