What is Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia?
Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a serious lung condition primarily affecting premature infants, particularly those born before 32 weeks of gestation or with low birth weight. It is characterized by abnormal lung development and inflammation, often resulting from prolonged oxygen therapy or mechanical ventilation required to support immature lungs.
Infants with BPD may experience difficulty breathing and may require long-term respiratory support. Common symptoms include rapid or labored breathing, persistent need for supplemental oxygen, wheezing, difficulty feeding, poor growth, and episodes of cyanosis. In severe cases, infants may develop chronic lung disease, frequent respiratory infections, and prolonged dependence on respiratory support.
BPD is typically diagnosed in premature infants who continue to require oxygen therapy or respiratory support after 28 days of life, particularly those born before 32 weeks of gestation. Diagnosis is based on clinical criteria, including oxygen dependence and radiographic evidence of lung abnormalities. Severity is also assessed based on the need for supplemental oxygen at 36 weeks postmenstrual age.
Treatment focuses on managing symptoms and supporting lung development. Key approaches include oxygen therapy or mechanical ventilation, diuretics, corticosteroids, nutritional support, and bronchodilators.
Emerging Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia Drug Profiles
Zelpultide alfa (AT-100): Airway Therapeutics, Inc.
Zelpultide alfa, also known as AT-100, is a novel biologic developed by Airway Therapeutics, Inc. It is a recombinant version of human surfactant protein D (rhSP-D), engineered to reduce inflammation and infection while modulating the immune response. The therapeutic candidate primarily targets Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia. Currently, the drug is in the Phase II/III stage of development for the treatment of Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia.
OHB-607: Oak Hill Bio
OHB-607, previously known as TAK-607, is a novel therapeutic candidate developed by Oak Hill Bio for extremely premature infants. It is a recombinant version of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), combined with its binding protein IGFBP-3. The therapy is designed to prevent Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia by restoring IGF-1 levels to those typically present during full-term pregnancy and supporting the normal growth and development of vital organs such as the lungs, brain, and eyes. Currently, the drug is in the Phase II stage of development for the treatment of Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia.
Pneumostem: Medipost Co., Ltd.
Pneumostem is an emerging cell-based therapeutic included in DelveInsight's Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia pipeline landscape. It is being investigated as a potential treatment approach for premature infants affected by Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia and is among the key products covered in the report.
