Mooring Inspection Market Size

Mooring Inspection Market Size

According to DataM Intelligence, the market was valued at USD 428.40 million in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 697.82 million by 2035, expanding at a 5.0% CAGR during 2026-2035. The market is increasingly tied to operational resilience, with inspection providers expected to deliver usable measurements, traceable records and engineering-ready findings rather than simply completing offshore survey campaigns.
Offshore operators are entering 2026 with a sharper focus on inspection decisions that reduce vessel time, support class compliance and prevent avoidable mooring failures. As deepwater floating assets operate longer and inspection programs move toward measured condition data rather than video-only surveys, the global mooring inspection market is gaining commercial importance.

Recent Developments in Mooring Inspection

• July 2026 - Intermoor expanded its FPSO project activity. Acteon reported the completion of design, installation and commissioning of emergency and towing systems for FPSO Cidade de Niterói MV18 in approximately 1,400 metres of water depth. The project demonstrates the wider connection between mooring expertise, floating-asset readiness and offshore intervention.

• July 2026 - DOF extended Petrobras contracts for two PLSVs. DOF announced extensions for Skandi Buzios and Skandi Recife, extending their Petrobras contracts through January 2028. The vessels are owned through a DOF and TechnipFMC joint venture, reinforcing continued demand for subsea offshore-service capacity in Brazil.

• March 2026 - Oceaneering launched its Momentum Electric Work Class ROV. The company introduced the ROV at the Subsea Tieback Forum, with the vehicle designed for continuous subsea operations of up to 30 days. Its stated applications include inspection, maintenance and repair, survey and construction, with plug-and-play sensors, 360-degree vision and automation.

• June 2026 - Oceaneering secured integrated offshore survey work.
Oceaneering announced multi-discipline offshore survey contracts for its Ocean Intervention II vessel supporting programs in Trinidad and the U.S. Gulf. The program began in April 2026 and includes geophysical, geotechnical and autonomous survey services.

Strategic Context for Mooring Inspection

Mooring inspection is moving from a periodic survey purchase toward a continuing asset-integrity requirement. The commercial question is no longer simply whether a mooring line has been inspected. Operators increasingly need to know whether measured wear is changing the remaining service period, whether a line needs intervention and whether the next offshore campaign can be targeted more precisely. That changes the value of inspection data.
Report identifies Below Water Inspection and Above Water Inspection as the principal market types and lists Close Visual Inspection, Magnetic Particle Inspection, Ultrasonic Testing, Electromagnetic Detection and Mooring Line Dimension Measurement among the technology segments.

Demand Pressure

The immediate demand pressure comes from three areas: existing floating assets, longer operating lives and the cost of offshore intervention. FPSOs, FSOs, FPUs, SPARs and semi-submersibles can remain in service for many years. Their mooring systems operate continuously under wave, current and load conditions, making inspection an ongoing requirement rather than a one-time procurement.

A provider that can increase measurement coverage during the same offshore window can therefore create value without necessarily increasing the number of vessel days. The 2026 contract activity in Brazil provides a clear commercial signal. DOF reported Petrobras inspection contracts covering more than 4,000 planned inspections across the Santos, Campos and Espírito Santo basins, with work beginning in 2026. The company said previous contracts had resulted in more than 7,000 completed inspections.

Technology Shift

The traditional purchasing assumption was straightforward: mobilize a vessel, deploy an ROV or diver, collect video, complete the survey and produce a report.
Quantitative metrology is adding another layer. Ashtead Technology's current mooring-inspection portfolio includes an optical Chain Measurement System, subsea calipers and 3D photogrammetry. The company positions the measurement tools for tracking corrosion and wear and using detailed 3D assessment where anomalies require deeper engineering analysis.
ROV capability is also changing. Oceaneering's Momentum Electric ROV is designed for extended subsea residency of up to 30 days, reducing the need to bring the vehicle back for routine maintenance during shorter operational windows.

Autonomous and uncrewed operations could change the cost model further. DeepOcean's USV Challenger combines an uncrewed surface vessel with a work-class ROV and remote operations. DeepOcean states that the vessel can remain at sea for approximately 14 to 30 days between port calls and is approved for uncrewed operations in the Norwegian sector.

Market Segmentation

• By Type: Below Water Inspection and Above Water Inspection.

• By Technology: Close Visual Inspection, Magnetic Particle Inspection,
Ultrasonic Testing, Electromagnetic Detection and Mooring Line Dimension Measurement.

• By Application: Oil and Gas Industry, Aquaculture, Marine and Others.

• By Region: North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa.

Below-water inspection generally involves greater subsea complexity and can require ROVs, divers, cleaning systems and specialist measurement equipment. Above-water inspection can support more accessible inspection scopes but does not eliminate the need for subsea assessment of permanently deployed mooring systems.

Regional Analysis

United States

The United States remains an important buying market because of the Gulf of Mexico's concentration of floating production, drilling and subsea infrastructure. For U.S. buyers, the strongest commercial case is likely to remain asset integrity, life extension and reduction of offshore campaign time. Inspection suppliers that can provide quantitative chain assessment, rope inspection, remote engineering and digital records are better positioned to support complex deepwater programs.

Japan

Japan presents a different buying signal, with floating offshore wind creating a longer-term requirement for mooring inspection. Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry reported that the Goto floating offshore wind farm began commercial operation in January 2026, describing it as Japan's first floating offshore wind farm to begin operation under the relevant marine renewable-energy framework.

Germany

Germany remains a major offshore wind market with an established North Sea operating base. The German Federal Network Agency reported 9.5 GW of installed offshore wind capacity in the North and Baltic Seas at the end of 2025. In June 2026, the agency said a revised grid-development plan could require up to eight additional offshore transmission connections by 2037 to support offshore wind expansion.

South Korea

South Korea represents a strategic offshore-energy and floating-wind opportunity, particularly for companies that can supply inspection, subsea robotics and measurement services alongside broader marine engineering. The commercial requirement is likely to favor suppliers able to work with shipyards, offshore developers and subsea contractors rather than offering inspection as an isolated service.

Competitive Positioning

• Acteon Group Ltd.
• Oceaneering International
• DeepOcean
• DOF Subsea
• Ashtead Technology Ltd

Acteon and Intermoor

Acteon has one of the broadest positions in the market through its Moorings and Anchors business line, Intermoor. DataM lists Acteon and InterMoor among the key market participants. Acteon's current service portfolio covers mooring installation and lifecycle support, while its August 2026 Petrobras award covers inspection, preservation, maintenance and operational readiness for mooring and anchoring materials. The company also reported that the award was Intermoor's third Petrobras contract in the previous 18 months.

Oceaneering International

Oceaneering combines subsea robotics with offshore inspection and intervention capabilities. Its March 2026 Momentum Electric ROV launch is particularly relevant to the inspection market because the vehicle was designed for extended subsea residency and inspection, maintenance and repair work. The company's Gulf operations also demonstrate continued use of integrated survey and autonomous capabilities in offshore programs.

Conclusion

The mooring inspection market is moving toward a purchasing model where inspection quality, measurement accuracy and operational efficiency are evaluated together. For buyers, the near-term priority is not to replace every existing inspection method. It is to determine where better measurement, remote operations or autonomous screening can reduce vessel exposure and improve the quality of integrity decisions.

For service providers, the commercial opportunity lies in packaging inspection with metrology, digital records, engineering support and repair readiness. For technology suppliers, the strongest entry points are tools that shorten inspection time, improve repeatability or generate data that can be compared across asset life.
