The authors concluded that, given this natural healing capacity, conservative treatment may reasonably be considered the first choice of care for many patients with lumbar disc herniation.

More recent reviews of the phenomenon, published in 2024 and 2025, have identified patient and disc characteristics associated with a higher likelihood of natural resorption - including younger age and larger initial herniation size - while noting that researchers are still working to fully understand which patients are the best candidates for a conservative-first approach versus earlier intervention.
