Our John Traces a Teen Prisoner's Journey Through American and French Captivity

Our John: The Glorious Life of János (John) L. by András Bányai brings attention to the overlooked experience of Central European teenagers transferred west during World War II and held in multiple Allied prisoner systems after the conflict.

The historical novel follows János Laczi, a young Hungarian from Kolozsvár in Transylvania, whose Levente youth training becomes increasingly militarized as the war reaches his city. Still a teenager, he is moved through Hungary and Austria before being captured by American forces near Salzburg in 1945.

János attempts to explain in limited English that he is Hungarian, young, and not a committed Nazi soldier. American officials, faced with large numbers of prisoners and suspicious of militarized youth organizations, classify him through his uniform and wartime associations rather than his individual history.

The novel depicts overcrowded and improvised American camps where prisoners sleep outdoors, receive inconsistent information, and wait for decisions about transfer. János and other Hungarian youths are later moved into French custody.

In France, the boys encounter harsher discipline, inadequate food, repeated relocation, and hostility from people who often mistake them for German occupiers. Their age and separate nationality do not immediately protect them from collective punishment.

Our John also presents important contrasts. French civilians on a farm in Picardy provide food, clothing, work, and kindness after learning that the young prisoners are Hungarian students. Religious representatives, Red Cross personnel, and international inspectors later advocate for minors held in poor conditions.

The novel examines how armies and governments use broad categories while individual lives remain morally complex. János is at once a teenager, a forced recruit, a technically trained youth, a Hungarian, a Romanian citizen from Transylvania, and a prisoner associated with a defeated military system.

Bányai dedicates the book to his uncle János Laczi and to the many young people whose experiences in wartime youth organizations and postwar captivity have received limited historical attention.
