Asia Methanol Price Tracker

Petrochemical buyers and traders searching for current Asia methanol prices and Strait of Hormuz supply disruption data now have a new monthly resource. Epignosis Insights, a market research and brand intelligence consultancy, has published its Asia Methanol Price Tracker for August 2026, reporting that CFR Southeast Asia methanol prices jumped 72% to $555 per tonne in March 2026, the highest level since 2021, after the February 28 outbreak of conflict involving Iran triggered an effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

What Caused the 2026 Asia Methanol Price Spike?

According to the Epignosis Insights tracker, S&P Global Platts data shows CFR Southeast Asia methanol prices held in a narrow $315-to-$325-per-tonne band from August 2025 through late February 2026, before the Strait of Hormuz closure cut off Iranian methanol supply that had met a large share of Asian demand. Trade publication CCFGroup reports Iran is the world's second-largest methanol producer, exporting roughly 90% of its 17.16-million-tonne annual capacity through the single port of Assaluyeh, a concentration that left the market acutely exposed once the disruption began. Iran-origin shipments to China fell to just 80,000 tonnes for the entire month of March, far below normal volumes.

Why Did China's Methanol Prices Rise Less Than Southeast Asia's?

The tracker documents a clear regional divergence. CFR China spot prices rose 46.5% to $381 per tonne over the same three-week window, well below Southeast Asia's 72% jump, because Chinese buyers held an estimated eight weeks of inventory and had Iran-origin cargoes already in transit when the conflict began, per Platts reporting. Southeast Asia, South Korea and Taiwan carried no equivalent buffer, and Saudi Arabia and Qatar could not reroute cargoes eastward fast enough to offset the shortfall. The resulting CFR China-to-Southeast-Asia spread widened to $174 per tonne by late March, briefly reopening an arbitrage window in which China became a source of re-exported cargoes.

How Are China's Domestic Methanol Futures and MTO Demand Reacting?

China's domestic methanol futures, tracked by Trading Economics, climbed from roughly 2,382 yuan per tonne in early 2026 to a peak near 3,370 yuan in early April, before easing as a temporary ceasefire allowed some Iranian volume to resume and Chinese methanol-to-olefins operators cut runs rather than absorb negative margins. Futures fell to 2,382 yuan by July 1, 2026, before renewed Iranian attacks on shipping pushed prices back to 2,786 yuan by July 20. By August 13, 2026, the contract had settled at 2,636 yuan per tonne, still 12.65% above year-ago levels, a sign the market has not returned to its pre-conflict baseline.

"The methanol market this year is a case study in how concentrated a single country's export infrastructure can be," said Abhijith Nair, Senior Research Manager at Epignosis Insights. "Iran ships 90% of its exports through one port, and when that port's access was cut, the price impact cascaded through every downstream Asian market within weeks, with China only partially insulated because of inventory buffers, not because it was structurally protected."

What Do Methanex's Earnings Reveal About Producer Pricing Power?

Methanex Corporation, the world's largest methanol producer, provides direct company-level confirmation of the pricing shift. Its global average realized price rose from $351 per tonne in the first quarter of 2026 to $529 per tonne in the second quarter, driving adjusted EBITDA of $577 million, the company's best quarterly results on record according to its own investor materials. Methanex guided July and August 2026 average realized prices to $460-$485 per tonne, a level still well above the pre-conflict baseline. The company also disclosed it would indefinitely idle its Titan facility in Trinidad and Tobago, taking a $115 million impairment charge, citing gas-supply economics that no longer supported continued operation.

What Should Buyers Expect for Asia Methanol Prices Through 2026?

The tracker's outlook section notes that the durability of Strait of Hormuz shipping access remains the key swing factor: a June 2026 memorandum of understanding required only Iran's "best efforts" for safe passage, a standard both sides have since disputed, and conflict resumed in July with attacks on vessels Iran deemed non-compliant. Industry body the Methanol Institute expects global demand growth to return to 2.5%-3.0% annually, up from under 1% between 2020 and 2025, while cautioning that persistent oversupply in the production base leaves prices exposed to exactly this kind of supply-side shock. For procurement teams, current elevated price levels should be treated as the working range for the near term rather than a transition point back to pre-conflict pricing.
