South London Trades adds locksmiths, pest control and tree surgeons to its directory

South London Trades, the local directory for South London homeowners, has expanded from 12 trade categories to 15. Locksmiths, pest control services and tree surgeons are now listed alongside builders, electricians, plumbers and the other trades the site already covers.

The three new categories add close to 500 businesses: 207 locksmiths, 166 pest control services and 120 tree surgeons. Each has its own page for every area the directory covers, from Dulwich and Clapham to Orpington, Chislehurst and Purley, so a homeowner looking for a tree surgeon in Beckenham lands on a page about tree surgeons in Beckenham rather than a national list sorted by whoever paid the most.

The new trades share a pattern the existing 12 mostly do not: the work is urgent, and the homeowner is usually deciding in a hurry. Someone locked out at 11pm, dealing with an infestation, or looking at a storm-damaged tree has no time to compare six quotes. Each new category page sets out what the work typically involves and what to check before agreeing a price - whether a locksmith's quote covers the call-out, the labour and the lock itself; whether pest control includes the follow-up visits most infestations need; and whether a tree is covered by a Tree Preservation Order, which makes unauthorised work a criminal offence.

"The trades we added are the ones people search for when something has already gone wrong," said [Name], founder of South London Trades. "That is exactly when a bad directory does the most damage. We would rather tell someone what to ask before they hand over their card than sell them a lead."

South London Trades now covers 15 trades across 28 areas, with more than 2,500 tradespeople listed. Listings are compiled from Google Maps and filtered to businesses rated three stars or higher with at least three reviews; tradespeople can also submit their business directly, and every submission is reviewed before it is published.

The company is explicit about the limits of that process. South London Trades is a directory, not a trade, and does not hold insurance or qualification documents for the businesses it lists. Homeowners are told to confirm cover and any statutory registration - Gas Safe for gas work, a Part P scheme for electrical work - directly with the tradesperson before work starts.

Browsing and contacting listed businesses is free for homeowners. Tradespeople who want priority placement on their area pages can upgrade to a featured listing for £29 per month, with no long-term contract.
