Living Dinosaur Neighbors: Plants and Animals That Survived the Age of Dinosaurs
Zigong, Sichuan, China - August 18, 2026 - When you stand beside a cycad, or look up to see a sparrow fly past - have you ever wondered: these familiar lives once witnessed the reign of dinosaurs? They are the "living fossils" that share our planet, the true "natives" from the dinosaur era. Today, let's get to know these "dinosaur neighbors" that have crossed hundreds of millions of years and still live alongside us.The Ancient Lineage of Plants
Cycads were a staple on the dinosaur menu. Their origins can be traced back to the Devonian period, approximately 350 million years ago. Most cycad fossils found today date to the Permian, but they reached global prominence during the Mesozoic, from the Triassic to the Cretaceous. Their tough, feathery leaves and starch-rich trunks provided abundant energy for many large herbivorous dinosaurs. In dinosaur fossil beds across China - including Zigong and Gansu - scientists often discover cycad leaf fossils preserved alongside dinosaur footprints and bones.
Ginkgo is a legend in the plant kingdom - its class, order, family, and genus contain only one living species: Ginkgo biloba, truly standing alone. The ginkgo first appeared approximately 345 million years ago during the Carboniferous and was globally widespread during the Mesozoic. In the Early Cretaceous fossils of the Jehol Biota discovered in Liaoning Province, ginkgo leaves were found buried together with feathered dinosaurs and primitive birds. The ginkgo's survival to this day is partly due to its remarkable resilience: chemical compounds in its leaves resist pests and diseases, while the outer layer of its seeds contains antibacterial substances. In late autumn, those golden, fan-shaped leaves are a greeting sent across hundreds of millions of years.
Metasequoia (dawn redwood), Sequoia (coast redwood), Sequoiadendron (giant sequoia) , and many species of cypress all have direct ancestors that once grew alongside dinosaurs. In the famous Petrified Forest National Park in the western United States, massive petrified wood dates back to the Late Triassic- the very era when dinosaurs were beginning their rise. These towering trees formed the primary forest landscapes where dinosaurs lived. The discovery of Metasequoia in Hubei Province, China, in 1941 was particularly remarkable - it was dubbed a "living fossil" because scientists had believed it to be extinct, known only from the fossil record.

Ancient Bloodlines in the Animal Kingdom
Modern crocodiles, alligators, and gharials bear a striking resemblance in form and lifestyle to their Cretaceous ancestors. For example, the famous Sarcosuchus lived approximately 110 million years ago in Africa, reaching lengths of up to 12 meters and standing as the apex predator of its time. Their semi-aquatic, ambush-hunting strategy has proven to be an exceptionally successful "design," passed down steadily through dramatic environmental changes. The crocodile's complex four-chambered heart and unique metabolic patterns are traits that helped them survive the mass extinction event 66 million years ago.
The tuatara , which lives on a few islands of New Zealand, is the sole surviving representative of the order Rhynchocephalia. This group was extremely diverse during the Triassic, coexisting with early dinosaurs. The tuatara's evolutionary rate has been exceptionally slow - its skull structure and third "parietal eye" (a light-sensing organ) are nearly identical to those of its fossil ancestors from 200 million years ago. Studying the tuatara is like peering through a living window into the primitive reptiles of the dinosaur era.
Though they live in the ocean, the very existence of horseshoe crabs is a marvel. They belong to the subphylum Chelicerata, making them more closely related to spiders and scorpions than to true crabs. Fossil ancestors of horseshoe crabs date back to the Ordovician, and the modern horseshoe crab form was essentially established around 200 million years ago. Their unique blue blood (containing copper ions) is highly valuable for medical testing. While dinosaurs ruled the land, the ancestors of horseshoe crabs roamed the shallow seas - and they still retain nearly the same appearance today.

These "dinosaur neighbors" are more than marvels. They are living archives of Earth's evolutionary history. Within their genomes, physiological mechanisms, and ecological roles lie the keys to understanding the adaptive strategies of ancient life. At the same time, many of them face modern threats such as habitat destruction and climate change. Protecting them means protecting a unique, still-unfolding epic of life.
The next time you trace the veins of a ginkgo leaf, or marvel at the ancient gaze of a crocodile, remember - you are touching a living memory that spans the reign of dinosaurs. They are right here, living alongside us, telling a story of time's depth and life's resilience.

What Are the Primary Methods for Measuring Dissolved Oxygen in Water?
Pudong, Shanghai, China - August 18, 2026 - Dissolved oxygen (DO) content is a critical parameter for assessing the self-purification capacity of aquatic environments and evaluating overall water quality. The concentration of dissolved oxygen directly influences the composition and distribution of aquatic biological communities. For most fish species, DO levels must exceed 4 mg/L to support normal physiological functions. Consequently, dissolved oxygen is a key indicator in routine water quality…
Biodegradable Clear Tape: The BOPP Alternative Nobody Talks About
Shaoxing, Zhejiang, China - August 18, 2026 - Five facts a packaging buyer needs before switching from BOPP tape:
* Cellulose-based clear tape decomposes in 8-12 weeks under industrial composting (EN 13432, 58 degrees C, 65% RH), whereas BOPP tape persists for 200-400 years as fragmented microplastic.
* On automated packing lines, regenerated cellulose tape runs at 30-60 m/min with no measurable difference in seal failure rate compared with BOPP, based on…
