Michael Earls: As AI Becomes More Capable, Being Human Becomes More Valuable
Michael Earls, an Enterprise Cloud and AI leader, author, and technology strategist, is expanding his work around a simple idea: as artificial intelligence becomes more capable, the qualities that make us distinctly human become more valuable. After more than two decades working across infrastructure, cloud, data, AI, and large-scale enterprise transformation, Michael Earls has watched technology repeatedly change how people work. AI represents another major shift, but he believes the conversation has become too focused on what machines can do and not focused enough on what humans should continue to do.
"We have spent years teaching machines to become more human. Maybe it is time we become better at being human again," said Michael Earls.
That means protecting skills that cannot simply be delegated to an algorithm: empathy, emotional intelligence, trust, judgment, intuition, genuine human connection, and the ability to use your own voice.
Michael Earls describes this as being "Human First in a Digital World."
AI can analyze more information than a person could reasonably consume. It can recognize patterns, generate ideas, summarize conversations, write code, and increasingly take action on our behalf. Those capabilities create enormous opportunities for organizations and individuals. But they also make human judgment more important.
Data matters. So does experience. But sometimes the butterflies in your stomach matter too. Sometimes a leader senses that something is wrong before a dashboard shows it. Sometimes trust built over years matters more than another data point. Sometimes leadership means listening, making a judgment, and having the courage to use your own voice.
This philosophy connects the three books Michael Earls has written about navigating technological and personal change.
"Finding Direction in the Age of AI" is the map. It explores leadership, clarity, and finding direction while technology accelerates around us.
"Wired for Purpose" is the practice. It focuses on the everyday choices, habits, reflection, and intentionality required to remain grounded.
"The Digital Compass" is the compass itself, built around the idea that speed without direction is just added noise.
Together, the books explore a question Michael Earls believes will become increasingly important as AI moves deeper into organizations and everyday life: What happens to the human skills we stop practicing because machines can perform parts of them for us?
The answer is not to slow technology down or reject AI. Michael Earls believes AI can create space for people to become more human by removing repetitive work, helping people understand information faster, and allowing more time for creativity, relationships, judgment, and meaningful conversation.
The challenge for leaders is to make sure that actually happens.
"The value of AI should not be measured only by how much work the machine can do," said Michael Earls. "Part of its value should be measured by how much more human it allows people to become."
For Michael Earls, that is becoming the larger conversation behind his writing, books, podcast appearances, and work in technology: how to embrace the extraordinary capabilities of AI without surrendering the qualities that make people worth listening to, following, trusting, and connecting with.
Technology will continue to accelerate. The opportunity is not to compete with machines at being machines. It is to get better at being human.
