CEREVITY Extends Confidential Clinical Support Into CEO Transitions

Press release from: Timedaily

A record share of first-time chief executives, an elevated rate of departures at public companies and a succession discipline built entirely around the org chart frame a gap that boards now weigh against the cost of a failed first year.

CEO turnover in the United States stayed near record levels through 2025, with Challenger, Gray and Christmas recording 446 chief executive exits at publicly traded companies over the year. Russell Reynolds Associates reported in its 2025 Global CEO Turnover Index that 86 percent of new chief executive appointments went to first-time CEOs, while the projected annual succession rate across the S and P 500 rose to 13 percent from 10 percent the prior year. CEREVITY, a nationwide private-pay network of independent licensed clinicians, reads that combination as a clinical exposure rather than a governance one, and has formalized CEO transition support for boards and CHROs as a distinct service line.

Succession planning addresses who holds the role and says nothing about the two people carrying it. The outgoing chief executive loses a title that has functioned as an identity, often over a compressed period and sometimes without choosing the timing. The incoming chief executive, in most cases now for the first time, absorbs scrutiny from a board that has not yet decided what it thinks. Both sit inside the same organization, and neither has a peer inside it.

Martha Fernandez, Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Co-Founder of CEREVITY, points to the structural isolation as the part boards consistently underestimate, since the ordinary supports available to any other executive are unavailable at this level by definition. "The chief executive is the one person in the building with no internal peer and no one who can hear the doubt without repricing their own position," she says.

The presentations CEREVITY sees across transitions cluster into a small number of pictures. Identity loss follows departure, frequently arriving several weeks after the handover rather than during it, once the calendar empties. Imposter pressure runs through the first year in the seat, sharpened for a first-time chief executive with no prior reference point for the volume of scrutiny. Decision fatigue concentrates during the handoff period, when both parties are making consequential calls with incomplete authority. Sleep disruption and a widening reliance on alcohol travel alongside all of it and are the least likely to be mentioned to anyone internally.

Coaching is the standard response and is not the same intervention. Executive coaching operates on performance and is frequently commissioned, scoped and reported to the board or the chief human resources officer. That reporting relationship is appropriate for a development engagement and disqualifying for a clinical one. Fernandez frames the distinction as a question of what the room is for, "a coaching engagement the board commissioned is not a room where a chief executive will say the thing that actually matters, and no assurance changes that, because the person is pricing the risk correctly."

CEREVITY structures the engagement so that no clinical information reaches the board, the chief human resources officer or the sponsoring organization in any form. Care is private-pay and out-of-network, so no insurance claim is filed and no diagnosis code is submitted to a carrier. Clinical records remain with the treating clinician under state confidentiality law and psychotherapist-patient privilege, subject to the ordinary legal exceptions a clinician explains at intake. Engagement is reported to a sponsoring organization in aggregate only, and never by name.

Clinicians are matched by hand rather than by directory search, with a clinician reading the intake before the match is made. Sessions run 8am to 8pm Pacific, seven days a week, in 50-minute, 90-minute and 3-hour intensive formats, delivered by secure video nationwide, with a first appointment typically available inside 48 hours. The 3-hour intensive is used most often during compressed transition periods, where a calendar produces one usable block rather than a repeating weekly hour. Validated instruments are administered at intake so the opening position is a baseline rather than a verdict, and re-run through treatment, with the approach changed rather than the client where the measures do not move.

Burnout is the term most executives use on first contact, and CEREVITY treats it as a starting point rather than a formulation. The World Health Organization classifies burn-out in ICD-11 as an occupational phenomenon rather than a medical condition, which means it is not itself the treatment target.
Assessment establishes what has grown alongside it, most often a depressive episode narrated as a hard year, an anxiety disorder reclassified as diligence, or insomnia disorder that preceded both.

The business case sits in the failure rate of first years rather than in wellbeing language. A chief executive transition that fails inside eighteen months costs a company the search, the severance, the strategic pause and a second transition, against an intervention priced in sessions. Fernandez keeps the framing narrow, "nobody is claiming therapy makes someone a better chief executive, only that a first year run in a permanent threat state is a first year with worse judgment in it."

AI detectors have become a routine part of content workflow in 2026. Writers, editors, teachers, publishers, and SEO teams use them to estimate whether or not text content seems AI-generated.
