First Ethnomycological Study from Within the African Initiatory Tradition Published - Scholar-Priest Documents 300+ Psilocybin Ceremonies in Landmark Academic Paper

Robert S. Shumake PhD, the tri-lineage initiated scholar-priest publishing as Ajarn Shaman Shu, has released "Shurooms
The publication marks a paradigm shift in psychedelic scholarship. For the first time in the history of ethnomycological research, a study of sacred mushroom ceremony has been authored not by an outside observer, clinical researcher, or journalist, but by an initiated lineage-holder with priestly authority across three distinct spiritual traditions spanning two continents.
The Observer Problem in Psychedelic Research
Western psychedelic scholarship has long suffered from what Shumake calls "the Observer Problem." R. Gordon Wasson observed Mazatec mushroom ceremonies in 1955 but was never initiated into the tradition he documented. Richard Evans Schultes spent decades cataloging indigenous plant use across the Amazon but did not practice within any lineage. Roland Griffiths at Johns Hopkins measured psilocybin's effects in clinical settings entirely outside any traditional ceremonial context.
"These men contributed enormously to the scientific record," Shumake writes. "But they were watching through a window. This work opens the door from the inside. It represents the shift from research on indigenous medicine to scholarship from indigenous initiation."
The paper documents participant-observation across more than 300 guided sacred mushroom ceremonies conducted at an urban ashram in Detroit, Michigan. Participants included physicians, attorneys, corporate executives from Fortune 100 companies, veterans, and individuals seeking healing from grief, addiction, and spiritual disconnection. Ceremonial doses ranged from 5 to 10 grams, structured by the author's Ten Principles of Ceremony, ngoma sonic navigation drawn from the Southern African healing drum tradition, and ubuntu relational philosophy.
Findings present a four-part typology of healing: the Successful-but-Armored (high achievers whose defenses prevent intimacy), the Carrier of Unprocessed Grief (individuals holding generational or personal loss), the Interruption of Addiction (substance and behavioral patterns dissolved through ceremony), and the Spiritually Hungry (seekers who have exhausted conventional religious frameworks).
Tri-Lineage Authority: An Unprecedented Credential
What distinguishes this publication from all prior psychedelic literature is the author's initiatory standing. No other living scholar-practitioner holds all three of the following credentials simultaneously:
Oluwo (Yoruba/Ifa tradition) - High priest of Osain, the Orisha of sacred plants, fungi, and forest medicine. Received into the Osain high priest society through Awo Daweed by divination. The Osain priesthood is the pharmacological and healing branch of Yoruba spiritual science, governing all ceremonial use of plant and fungal medicine within the tradition.
Swamikal (Hindu/Dravidian tradition) - Authority in the Vedic soma tradition. The Tamil honorific "Swamikal" is conferred upon completion of the tradition, not upon entry. Shumake completed his training under Aghori Shri Ganesh in India, qualifying him to speak with authority on the ancient soma sacrament described in the Rigveda.
Ajarn (Thai Buddhist tradition) - Master teacher trained in bardo navigation, the Tibetan Buddhist science of guiding consciousness through transitional states. This credential provides the framework for safely navigating the dissolution of ego and the encounter with death-and-rebirth experiences that characterize high-dose psilocybin ceremony.
The theoretical framework synthesizes all three lineages into a single model: Osain provides the key (the medicine itself); Soma opens the door (divine communion with the transcendent); the Bardo guides the passage (safe navigation through altered states of consciousness).
Connection to Detroit's Proposal E
Shumake is also the author of Detroit's Proposal E, the 2021 ballot measure that decriminalized entheogenic plants in the city of Detroit. The measure passed with 61.08 percent of the vote, making Detroit one of the first major American cities to decriminalize natural psychedelics including psilocybin mushrooms, ayahuasca, mescaline-containing cacti, and ibogaine.
The publication of "Shurooms" represents the scholarly foundation underlying that legislative achievement - documenting the ceremonial, therapeutic, and spiritual context in which these substances have been used safely and effectively within an African initiatory framework for generations.
