Crypto Terms You Actually Need to Know Before Your First

Most crypto glossaries explain what a blockchain is and stop being useful shortly afterward. The terms that matter when you are actually moving money are narrower and more specific - and they tend to appear for the first time on the screen where a mistake costs something.
These are the ones worth knowing before you press confirm.

Terms on the Withdrawal Screen

Network (or chain). The specific blockchain a transfer travels on. The same asset often exists on several, and they are not interchangeable in transit. This is the single most consequential field on the page.
Address. The destination identifier, unique to a network. Bitcoin addresses look nothing like Ethereum addresses, but Ethereum addresses are identical in format across many networks - which is why a valid-looking address confirms nothing about which chain it belongs to.
Memo (or tag, or destination tag). An additional identifier some platforms require alongside the address so they can attribute an incoming deposit to the right account. Omitting one where it is requested usually means the funds arrive but sit unassigned until support intervenes.
Whitelist. A list of pre-approved withdrawal addresses. Enabling one, ideally with a delay before new addresses activate, is among the most effective security settings available.
Minimum withdrawal. The smallest amount a platform will send. There is usually a corresponding minimum on the receiving side, and a deposit below it may not be credited.

Terms About Cost

Network fee. Paid to the blockchain itself. Varies by network and by congestion.
Gas. Ethereum's term for computation cost, priced in gwei, a small denomination of ETH. Token transfers cost more gas than simple transfers because they execute contract code.
Platform fee. What the service charges, stated upfront. Usually the smallest surprise.
Spread. The gap between the rate you are quoted and the mid-market rate. Rarely itemised anywhere, and frequently the largest single cost in a conversion. A service advertising zero commission may earn more here than one charging a visible fee.
Slippage. The difference between the expected price and the executed price, occurring when an order is large relative to available liquidity. Mostly relevant to larger conversions.
Fixed vs floating rate. A fixed rate locks what you receive at the moment of quoting. A floating rate settles at execution and can differ. Fixed rates typically carry a slightly wider margin as the cost of certainty.

Terms About Timing

Broadcast. The transaction has been sent to the network but not yet included in a block. Nothing is settled yet.
Confirmation. A block containing your transaction, plus each subsequent block built on top of it. More confirmations make reversal progressively less feasible.
Confirmation threshold. The number of confirmations a receiving platform requires before crediting a deposit. This - not block time - usually determines when funds become usable, and it varies by asset and platform.
Finality. The point at which a transaction is considered permanent. Different networks reach it at different speeds.
Pending. Ambiguous, and worth diagnosing rather than worrying about. If no transaction hash exists, the delay is on the sending platform. If a hash exists but has no confirmations, the fee was likely too low. If it is confirmed but not credited, the receiving side's threshold has not been met.
Transaction hash (or TXID). The unique identifier for a transaction, viewable on a block explorer. Record it. It resolves nearly every support conversation quickly.

Terms About Where Funds Sit

Custodial. Someone else holds the private keys - an exchange account, for instance. Password resets and support exist, but access depends on that company.
Self-custody (or non-custodial). You hold the private key. Nobody can freeze the funds, and nobody can restore access if you lose the key.
Private key. The cryptographic secret authorising transfers from an address. Whoever holds it controls the funds.
Seed phrase (or recovery phrase). Typically twelve or twenty-four words that regenerate a wallet. Functionally, it is the wallet. Never photograph it, type it into anything, or store it digitally. No legitimate service ever needs it.
Hot wallet. Connected to the internet. Convenient, appropriate for spending amounts.
Cold wallet. Keys kept offline, usually on a hardware device. Appropriate for holdings you would be seriously affected by losing.

Terms About Assets

Stablecoin. A token designed to track another asset's value, almost always the US dollar. Used widely as a waypoint during withdrawals because value stays predictable while decisions are made.
Native asset. The coin a network uses for fees - ETH on Ethereum, TRX on TRON, SOL on Solana. A wallet holding tokens with none of it cannot move them.
Token standard. The technical specification a token follows on a given network. ERC-20 means Ethereum, TRC-20 means TRON, SPL means Solana. These labels tell you the network, which is why they appear on withdrawal screens.
Wrapped asset. A representation of one blockchain's asset on another. Wrapped Bitcoin on Ethereum is not Bitcoin and cannot be sent to a Bitcoin address.

Terms About Accounts

KYC. Identity verification, required by regulated services. Verification tiers typically unlock progressively higher limits.
Source of funds. Documentation showing where money originated, commonly requested for larger withdrawals. Routine rather than accusatory, and much faster to resolve if records were kept as you went.
Two-factor authentication (2FA). A second login credential. App-based or hardware key options are meaningfully stronger than SMS, which is vulnerable to SIM-swap fraud.
Users reviewing what a service supports before transferring can check assets, networks and payment methods through platforms such as https://boomchange.com alongside their existing exchange.

The Short Version

If you remember only three things: the network field decides whether your transfer arrives at all, the spread is usually the real cost rather than the fee, and confirmations rather than block time determine when funds become usable.
For readers comparing where to convert crypto into spendable funds, https://boomchange.io is one option among others, and supported assets, networks, payment methods and costs are set by the providers involved and change over time. Confirming current specifics before transacting remains more reliable than working from earlier figures.

How to Withdraw USDT to Skrill in 2026 (Complete Withdrawal Guide)
If you have been searching for a way to move USDT to Skrill, you are most likely trying to turn stablecoins into money you can actually spend. USDT is fast, stable and cheap to send. But it cannot pay a bill, fund a card, or sit in a normal account. That is where services like https://boomchange.com come in, converting cryptocurrency into funds that can be received through Skrill. This guide explains how the process

How to Withdraw Bitcoin to Payoneer
Search for this and you'll find plenty of pages implying a one-click Bitcoin-to-Payoneer button exists somewhere. It mostly doesn't. Payoneer is built around cross-border business payments, and the crypto services that connect to it tend to do so through stablecoins rather than volatile assets. That's not an arbitrary limitation - it reflects what happens to a Bitcoin amount during the minutes a payout takes to process. The route still works. It just

Best Ways to Convert USDT to Fiat in 2026
The awkward truth about stablecoins is that they're only useful up to a point. A dollar-pegged token holds its value perfectly, moves across the world in seconds, and costs almost nothing to send. Then you try to pay rent with it. Getting USDT into spendable currency is a solved problem - there are more routes now than there were two years ago, and most of them work well. The question is
Turning Ethereum Into a Skrill Balance
Turning Ethereum Into a Skrill Balance
There's a decision most people skip past when cashing out: whether they actually want the money in a bank yet. Bank transfers are cheap and slow and final. The money arrives, sits in an account, and generally stops being convenient to move again. Skrill occupies different ground - a balance that can sit there, get spent through a linked card, or move onward to a bank when it suits you. For
