IGEN ENERGATHON 2026 Concludes 26-Hour Global Energy Action Marathon Across Five Continents
CHENNAI, INDIA - August 2026 - The Institution of Green Engineers (IGEN) has successfully concluded IGEN ENERGATHON 2026, the fifth edition of its Global Energy Action Marathon, held from 3:00 PM on 7 August to 5:00 PM on 8 August 2026 under the theme "Energy Without Borders for Sustainable Communities." The 26-hour global programme brought together experts, policymakers, researchers, academicians, industry leaders, innovators, youth representatives, development organisations and sustainability advocates from across continents for continuous dialogue, knowledge exchange, policy discussion, innovation and community-focused energy action.
The programme was organised by The Institution of Green Engineers (IGEN) jointly with the URI Cooperation Circle - IGEN VIBBGGYOR Green Circle. The Global Inaugural Ceremony and Global Continental Introduction Conclave featured distinguished national and international personalities, including Padma Bhushan Dr. A. Sivathanu Pillai, distinguished scientist and former Chief of BrahMos Aerospace, as Special Chief Guest; Mr. Zhouxinyu Ji, President of the Yanghu Taichi Association of America, as Global Chief Guest; and Mr. M. Chandrasekar, former Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission, as National Chief Guest.
A defining feature of ENERGATHON 2026 was its five-continent approach, bringing together regional priorities within a common global energy platform. Dedicated assemblies for Africa, Europe, the Americas, Australia and Asia addressed issues including energy access, clean-energy transition, smart energy transformation, climate-resilient energy systems, renewable energy, smart grids, emerging technologies and community-led energy solutions. The Asia Sustainable Energy Transition Assembly further explored renewable energy, smart grids and emerging technologies in support of an inclusive and just energy transition.
Youth leadership and innovation formed a major part of the programme. The IGEN Youth Sustainability Leadership League conducted the Youth Energy & Climate Change Policy Pitch 2026, giving young leaders an opportunity to present ideas addressing energy and climate challenges. Other sessions provided platforms for youth sustainability leaders to present ideas connected with the Sustainable Development Goals. Partner institutions also conducted programmes addressing AI and global energy efficiency, AI for energy efficiency and sustainability, sustainable-energy research and project demonstrations.
The marathon was aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goal 7 - Affordable and Clean Energy and the wider 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. A central objective was to move beyond dialogue and develop practical, evidence-informed recommendations that could support governments, educational institutions, industries, civil society organisations and communities in implementing scalable, inclusive and sustainable clean-energy solutions.
A major outcome of the programme will be the IGEN White Paper on "Energy Without Borders for Sustainable Communities." The White Paper will consolidate policy recommendations, innovative ideas, research insights and action proposals emerging from experts, speakers and youth across the five continents and thematic sessions. IGEN plans to work with participating experts to review and finalise the recommendations, with the White Paper expected to be released within one month and subsequently communicated to governments, energy agencies, institutions and other stakeholders.
The 26-hour programme concluded on 8 August with the IGEN White Paper Recommendation & Grand Valedictory Ceremony. Mr. APJIM Sheikh Dawood, Founder of the D.J. APJ Abdul Kalam International Foundation, and Mr. Biswadeb Chakraborty, Indian Regional Coordinator of the United Religions Initiative (URI), participated as Chief Guests in the concluding sessions.
IGEN ENERGATHON has evolved significantly since its first edition in 2020, which was a 13.36-hour non-stop virtual conference. The initiative expanded to 19.13 continuous hours in 2023 and a 25-hour-25-minute global marathon in 2024, followed by a large-scale global energy action programme in 2025. With its fifth edition, ENERGATHON 2026 has developed further into a global five-continent energy action platform connecting regional perspectives with global expertise.
Speaking about the vision of ENERGATHON 2026, Dr. L. Ramesh, President of IGEN, said, "Energy knows no borders-when nations unite, sustainable communities thrive, and together we power a greener future." He emphasised that the success of ENERGATHON should be measured not only by its duration or scale, but by the knowledge generated, policy recommendations developed and actions emerging from the global dialogue.
"IGEN ENERGATHON 2026 concludes as a programme, but it begins as a global policy and action journey," he added.
The event was supported by organising partners including The Institution of Green Engineers, URI Cooperation Circle - IGEN VIBBGGYOR Green Circle, Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute, Sri Eshwar College of Engineering, St. Xavier's Catholic College of Engineering, St. Joseph's College of Engineering, St. Joseph's Institute of Technology, KCG College of Technology and Sri Manakula Vinayagar Engineering College, along with several international and national session partners.
