Polyimide raw materials are the chemical building blocks and processing inputs used to manufacture polyimide (PI) resins, films, and coatings. The core monomers are typically an aromatic dianhydride (such as PMDA, BPDA, BTDA, ODPA, or 6FDA) and an aromatic diamine (such as ODA, p-phenylenediamine, MDA, DDS, or MPDA/OPDA), which first react to form poly(amic acid) in a suitable solvent and then undergo imidization (usually by heat, or sometimes by chemical dehydrating agents) to become polyimide. In 2025, global Polyimide Raw Materials production reached approximately 136.5 K MT, with an average global market price of around US$ 11022 per MT.

The polyimide (PI) raw materials market-dominated by aromatic dianhydrides (e.g., PMDA, BPDA, BTDA, ODPA, 6FDA) and aromatic diamines (e.g., ODA, PPD, DDS, MDA, MPDA/OPDA)-is mainly driven by downstream growth in electronics and semiconductors (flex circuits/FPC, FCCL, insulation layers, advanced packaging, and high-temperature dielectrics), plus rising requirements for thin, high-reliability films and varnishes in compact consumer devices. Aromatic diamines commonly rely on nitro-aromatic intermediates followed by catalytic hydrogenation (so nitric acid, hydrogen, catalysts, and hydrogenation capacity matter), and some key diamines (like MDA) are closely tied to aniline and formaldehyde economics and integration with adjacent value chains. Beyond monomers, practical PI production also depends heavily on polar aprotic solvents (e.g., NMP/DMAc/DMF) and process chemicals (imidization/curing aids and purification utilities), so solvent availability, regulatory constraints, and recycling infrastructure can materially impact delivered costs and qualification stability.
