By End-Use

Industrial use is the fastest-growing segment, as manufacturers turn to biomethane as the only drop-in route to decarbonise existing high-temperature furnaces and boilers, while buildings and power generation draw on grid-injected volumes through existing infrastructure.

Market Dynamics

Policy is the principal driver of the biomethane market. The REPowerEU plan targets 35 bcm of domestic production by 2030, RED III pulls biomethane into transport and industry through binding renewable targets, and national schemes reinforce them, with France targeting 24 TWh of grid injection by 2028. Energy security has become an equally powerful driver, since biomethane is produced domestically from local waste and insulates buyers from imported gas price volatility.

However, the gap between ambition and delivery remains the central constraint. At 8.2 bcm of installed European capacity against a 35 bcm target for 2030, the sector must expand roughly fourfold in under four years, while current investment commitments point to about 9 bcm of additions. Projects remain subsidy-dependent, permitting is slow and fragmented, feedstock collection is logistically complex, and grid connection costs constrain injection in several markets.

Europe leads the global biomethane market with roughly 60% of value, underpinned by the deepest policy framework and the largest installed base. Germany operates the world's largest grid-injection network with more than 240 upgrading plants connected to the national gas grid, while France, Denmark, the UK, Italy, and the Netherlands drive incremental growth.

North America is expected to register the fastest growth, with US renewable natural gas output around 136 PJ and accelerating since 2022 under the Renewable Fuel Standard, state low-carbon fuel standards, and Inflation Reduction Act incentives that reward negative-carbon-intensity manure projects.

The number of plants rose from 1,678 to 1,975 as 327 new facilities entered operation during the period.

In 2026, biomethane investment commitments reached EUR 36 billion, a significant increase on the EUR 28 billion reported a year earlier. These commitments are projected to deliver an additional 9 bcm per year of European production capacity by 2030, though the trajectory still falls short of the EU's 35 bcm REPowerEU target.
