Miami Attorney Urges Drivers to Prioritize Pedestrian Safety as Students Return to School
Mario Serralta & Associates highlights heightened risks around Miami school zones, crosswalks and neighborhood streets as back-to-school traffic returnsMIAMI, Fla. - With Miami-Dade County students returning to classrooms Aug. 13, the beginning of the new school year is bringing renewed attention to pedestrian safety around schools, crosswalks, bus stops and residential streets. Mario Serralta & Associates is urging South Florida motorists to slow down, eliminate distractions and remain particularly alert for children and families during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal periods.
The warning comes as communities across South Florida place additional emphasis on school-zone safety. Miami-Dade County has continued investing in Safe Routes to School improvements designed to strengthen pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure and increase motorist awareness around schools. Elsewhere in South Florida, communities are also expanding technology-based enforcement aimed at reducing dangerous speeding in school zones.
For Miami drivers, the return of school means an abrupt change in everyday traffic patterns. Streets that experienced lighter activity during summer vacation will again see school buses stopping, crossing guards directing students, parents entering and exiting drop-off lines, cyclists traveling to school and children crossing neighborhood streets.
"The first few weeks of school require everyone's full attention behind the wheel," said Mario Serralta, attorney and founder of Mario Serralta & Associates. "Children can be difficult for motorists to see, and something as simple as looking at a phone or driving too fast for conditions can have devastating consequences. Drivers need to expect more pedestrians and give themselves additional time."
Pedestrian safety has remained an important issue throughout Miami-Dade County. Previous county Vision Zero data cited by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue showed that 355 crashes involving serious injuries or fatalities occurred in 2024, including 261 involving pedestrians and 94 involving bicycles.
Children can face particular risks because of their smaller size, limited experience judging vehicle speed and distance, and unpredictable movement around streets and parking areas.
School buses introduce another critical safety consideration. Drivers should be prepared for frequent stops and remain attentive when children are boarding or exiting buses. Motorists should also approach crosswalks cautiously and avoid blocking pedestrian pathways while waiting in school traffic.
Distracted driving presents an additional concern. Phones, navigation systems, passengers and other distractions can take a driver's attention away from the road precisely when a child enters a crosswalk or steps from between parked vehicles.
"Pedestrian accidents happen incredibly fast, but the consequences can affect a family for years," Serralta said. "The safest approach is simple: slow down, put the phone away and assume that a child or pedestrian could enter your path at any moment when you're driving near a school."
Families can also take preventive measures. Parents should identify safe walking routes, encourage children to cross at designated locations, use sidewalks whenever available and remind students to avoid phones and headphones while crossing streets. Bright or reflective clothing can help improve visibility, particularly during periods of low light or poor weather.
When a pedestrian is struck by a vehicle, injuries can be severe because the person has virtually no physical protection from the impact. Depending on the circumstances, victims may experience fractures, head injuries, spinal trauma and other injuries requiring emergency treatment and extended rehabilitation.
Mario Serralta & Associates also encourages families to understand what to do if an accident occurs. Obtaining medical assistance should be the immediate priority. When circumstances allow, documenting the location, obtaining witness information and preserving information concerning the vehicle and driver can become important later.
As Miami-Dade begins another school year, Serralta says pedestrian safety ultimately depends on motorists, parents, students and communities sharing responsibility for preventing avoidable crashes.
"Getting somewhere a few minutes faster is never worth putting a child at risk," Serralta said. "As students return to school, every driver in Miami has an opportunity to make our streets safer."
Newsworthiness Justification
The Aug. 13 return of Miami-Dade County students creates an immediate shift in pedestrian and vehicle traffic around hundreds of schools and surrounding neighborhoods. The timing coincides with Miami-Dade investment in Safe Routes to School improvements and heightened school-zone enforcement efforts elsewhere in South Florida, making pedestrian safety a timely public-interest issue as families begin the 2026-27 school year.
