Press release
SPORTMATCH - Find. Connect. Grow. Build your own community. Build the future of sports.
The sports world needs more connection: SPORTMATCH, based in Austria, aims to create a digital ecosystem for sportsBringing athletes, coaches, clubs, federations, universities, partners, and sponsors together on a single platform--SPORTMATCH-pro pursues the vision of an open, international sports network.
Sports connect people across borders, languages, and cultures. However, the digital sports world remains highly fragmented. Athletes are looking for clubs, clubs are looking for coaches, coaches are looking for new opportunities, federations want to reach their members, and young athletes are struggling to gain attention and secure sponsors.
This is exactly where SPORTMATCH--originated and developed in Austria--comes in.
The idea behind SPORTMATCH didn't originate at the desk of a software company, but rather from decades of experience in sports.
Founder Christian Graupeter has been exploring the question of how people in sports can be more easily connected since 2006. The first concrete ideas emerged after he earned his degree as a certified coach at the DOSB's Cologne Coaching Academy. The idea continued to develop during his subsequent coaching career and his master's studies from 2014 to 2017 at the School of Sport at Leeds Beckett University.
The starting point was always the same.
"For many years, similar questions kept coming up from my actually small network: Do you know a club? Are they looking for a coach? Do you know an athlete? Is there a place to train there? At some point, it dawned on me that this problem wasn't specific to my network, but rather a fundamental issue in sports."
After several discussions about technical implementation and various attempts, Graupeter finally decided to bring the idea to life himself.
Today, SPORTMATCH is already online.
Not just another sports app, but a network
SPORTMATCH is deliberately not limited to soccer, basketball, or any other major sport.
In addition to established sports, smaller disciplines such as korfball, martial arts, rowing, roller sports, winter sports, and other sports communities should also be able to use the same digital infrastructure.
The concept follows a simple principle:
Find. Connect. Grow.
Athletes should be able to find people and opportunities. Coaches should be able to exchange ideas and discover new roles. Clubs should be able to organize members, coaches, and events. Federations should be able to build their own structures and communities.
Topics that are often given little attention in traditional sports networks are also an integral part of the platform. These include, among others, a Women in Sports Forum, a Coaching Forum for international knowledge exchange, and a section dedicated to anti-doping and clean sport.
A Community Feed is designed to bring together information, experiences, events, opportunities, and people.
From a Network to a Digital Club and Federation Structure
However, SPORTMATCH aims to go beyond networking.
Clubs will gradually gain access to tools for, for example, member management, group chats, training planning, events, and job postings. Federations and associations will also be able to build their own presence and community within the network.
In doing so, SPORTMATCH is pursuing an approach designed to bring together two worlds that have often been separate:
sports networking and sports management.
Current offerings on the market show that these two areas are increasingly converging. Some platforms focus on athletes and coaches, while others focus on club organization or sports communities. SPORTMATCH aims to connect these levels across all sports.
Ambassadors Instead of Million-Dollar Budgets
A key component of the growth strategy is the Founding Ambassador Network.
Instead of relying exclusively on paid influencers or large-scale advertising campaigns, SPORTMATCH seeks credible individuals from the world of sports who want to build their own communities.
These can be athletes, coaches, former elite athletes, club officials, or other figures from the world of sports.
Ambassadors receive special rights and benefits within the network and, in the future, will also be able to share in the financial rewards of their community's growth.
This gave rise to another idea:
Don't wait for a sponsor. Become one.
In the long term, an ambassador should do more than just promote SPORTMATCH. They should be able to build their own community and create opportunities for themselves and others through it.
Trusted Shops and Sponsors Become Part of the Ecosystem
Companies shouldn't just book traditional ads within SPORTMATCH.
Through the Trusted Partners / Trusted Shops section, relevant companies can become part of the sports network. In the future, this will also allow sponsors to specifically discover athletes, clubs, or projects.
This could create a cycle:
Athletes -> Coaches -> Clubs -> Federations -> Ambassadors -> Partners -> Sponsors -> Athletes.
This cycle is a key component of the long-term vision.
Athletes do not necessarily have to foot the bill
The business model is also currently being deliberately refined.
Following discussions with experts and entrepreneurs, the company is exploring the possibility of aligning SPORTMATCH even more closely with a freemium and B2B2C model.
Access for athletes should remain as low-threshold as possible. Additional premium services can be offered for a fee, while revenue can be generated more significantly in the long term through clubs, professional services, partners, sponsorship, recruiting, and other commercial activities within the network.
Thus, the principle is:
Athletes create the network.
Organizations and economic activity can monetize the network.
Initial International Response
Although SPORTMATCH is still in its early stages, the platform is already attracting international traffic.
Visitors from approximately 35 to 40 countries have now discovered the platform. Visits from Austria, the U.S., Germany, and Switzerland have been particularly noticeable so far. The first ambassadors are already part of the network.
These figures do not yet constitute proof of international market success. However, they do show that the idea is already generating interest outside the immediate personal network.
The Next Step
SPORTMATCH is therefore not just looking for capital.
We are seeking people with knowledge, experience, a network, and the desire to build something for sports.
This includes founding ambassadors as well as clubs, associations, universities, sponsors, strategic partners, and investors.
Graupeter's long-term goal is bigger than just another app:
"I want to create a place where, eventually, it won't matter whether someone plays soccer, wrestles, rows, plays korfball, or participates in winter sports. What matters is what that person is looking for, what they have to offer, and who they want to connect with."
SPORTMATCH - Find. Connect. Grow.
Build your own community. Build the future of sports.
Interest from the Sports and Digital Sectors
SPORTMATCH isn't being developed in a vacuum. Even during the development phase, discussions were held with experienced figures from the worlds of sports, SportsTech, and digital business.
An interesting picture emerged: Several of the people we spoke with are themselves grappling with similar challenges--such as digitally connecting athletes and clubs, building active sports communities, attracting users, or figuring out how such networks can be economically sustainable in the long term.
These discussions thus highlighted not so much individual features as the underlying problem: While the sports world has countless individual digital solutions, its stakeholders remain highly fragmented.
SPORTMATCH is also closely monitoring comparable projects and new platforms. The goal is not to copy existing solutions, but to learn from market developments and further develop its own platform in areas where it actually creates added value for the sports community.
The discussions so far have been encouraging. Experienced stakeholders generally see potential in the idea and its further development, but at the same time point out key challenges such as user acquisition, critical mass, and monetization.
It is precisely this feedback that is already being incorporated into SPORTMATCH.
For example, the original premium model is increasingly evolving toward a broader freemium and B2B2C approach, in which athletes can join the network with as low a barrier to entry as possible, while clubs, professional services, sponsorship, recruiting, trusted partners, and other commercial activities generate additional revenue streams.
SPORTMATCH is now also pursuing a community-driven approach to growth: Instead of spending large sums on traditional advertising, the goal is to build an international network of founding ambassadors, coaches, athletes, clubs, and associations whose own growth simultaneously fuels SPORTMATCH's growth.
"For me, criticism is just as important as approval. SPORTMATCH shouldn't grow simply because I'm convinced of the idea. The platform must grow because people in the sports world see real value in it."
Development has only just begun
SPORTMATCH therefore deliberately does not see itself as a finished product.
The platform is already live, the first ambassadors are active, and people from numerous countries have visited SPORTMATCH. At the same time, features, user experience, the community, and the business model are continuously being refined based on real-world usage and external feedback.
The philosophy behind this is simple:
Don't build as many features as possible--instead, create the right ecosystem for sports.
SPORTMATCH doesn't have to succeed by doing more than any other app. It has to connect the right people and organizations with one another.
"Reality Check": Initial Feedback
SPORTMATCH - Early Stage, Real Feedback
The platform is live. The first ambassadors are active. International visitors are coming in. Discussions with experienced figures from the sports and digital industries are providing ongoing feedback. The business model is being further validated. SPORTMATCH is thus deliberately in an early growth and learning phase.
"We learn from our mistakes and come back stronger. Sportmatch wants to leverage all these experiences and help others with them. As a coach, I think it's a great platform."
"Different than I imagined, better than expected, and exciting to see what comes of it."
"I'm happy to be an ambassador and, at the same time, my own sponsor."
"For me, as a club, I can combine everything--networking and managing my members."
