Understanding Longitudinal Bow (Camber)

Longitudinal bow - commonly called camber - is a horizontal-plane curvature that develops along the length of a roll-formed profile. Unlike bow or twist that appears in the vertical plane, camber is a sideways deviation from a straight centerline, visible when a profile is laid flat on the floor and viewed from above. Even a slight, consistent camber of a few millimeters per meter can push a profile out of tolerance for structural framing, cladding, or racking applications where straight-line installation is required.

Mill edge waviness, uneven slitting, or off-gauge coil stock entering the line already carries an internal stress imbalance. Even a well-aligned, well-tooled roll forming line will translate that pre-existing imbalance directly into camber, since the forming process amplifies rather than corrects unevenness already present in the strip.

Asymmetric Flower Pattern Design

The flower pattern - the sequence of cross-sectional shapes the strip takes through each stand - must distribute bend angles and elongation symmetrically about the profile's centerline. A flower pattern with unequal bend progression on each side, common in profiles with asymmetric features such as offset ribs or single-side lips, builds in a steering tendency from the pass design stage itself.

Side Guide or Edge Guide Misalignment

Entry and inter-stand side guides are meant to keep the strip centered without applying lateral force. Guides that are set too tight, angled, or worn unevenly can physically nudge the strip off-center, inducing a steering path that the forming rolls then lock into the finished profile's geometry.
