Nine Thousand Kilometres Apart, One Football Family: How Coritiba Welcomed an English Supporter as Their Own

Credit: Mariana Toneti | Coritiba.Diaspora communities know a particular kind of longing: the ache of loving a place you cannot easily reach. Ana Clara Butcher, born in Curitiba and now living in Norwich, understands it from one direction. Her husband Jonny understands it from the other, having built a devotion to a Brazilian football club he has never watched from inside its stadium.
Their story began, as many modern love stories do, online in 2023, connected in part by a shared interest sparked when Norwich City and Coritiba formalised a partnership the year before. What might have stayed a footnote in a club press release became, instead, a marriage joining two families across two continents, two languages and two footballing cultures.
Jonny had visited Curitiba once before his diagnosis, walking past Estádio Couto Pereira without managing to see a match inside it. Earlier this year, after being diagnosed with motor neurone disease at twenty-nine, he wrote down a list of experiences he hoped to still have. Watching Coritiba play from inside that stadium, seated beside his brother-in-law Lucas Espinoza, sat near the top.
For families split across borders, distance is rarely just about kilometres. It's about missed birthdays, video calls scheduled around time zones, and the particular grief of not being present for moments that matter. As Jonny's condition progressed, the physical journey to Brazil became impossible, adding another entry to the long list of things international families quietly give up.
Coritiba chose not to let that loss go unanswered. Ahead of their match against Chapecoense, the club dedicated a shirt to Jonny, his name printed across the back with a sunflower replacing the O and a message reading: 'Your strength inspires us. We stand as one,' echoed in Portuguese for supporters inside the stadium. It was a gesture built specifically for someone who could not be there in person, delivered by a club that understood exactly what that absence meant to him and to Ana Clara's family in Curitiba.
This is the quieter, more powerful side of global football fandom. Supporters who move abroad, marry into new cultures, or fall for a club through family rather than geography often describe a particular kind of belonging: loved from a distance, but rarely acknowledged by name. Coritiba's tribute reversed that. It put Jonny's name where thousands could see it, inside the exact stadium he had once stood outside of, unable to get in.
Ana Clara's homeland and Jonny's adopted club found a way to close nine thousand kilometres of distance for one evening. For international families navigating illness, distance and the ordinary difficulty of building a life across two countries, that kind of recognition rarely comes from a stadium of strangers. This time, it did.
