SALASPILS, Latvia - Latvian manufacturer Pedante is bringing automated material positioning to small and medium-sized workshops with a compact system designed to work with the machinery they already own.

Pedante was founded in 2024 by Agnis Apermanis - a carpenter with more than 15 years of experience building greenhouses, gazebos, garden houses, sheds and other timber structures. The idea came directly from a problem he repeatedly encountered in his own workshop.

"When cutting batches of parts in different lengths, I was constantly measuring," says Agnis, when asked about the idea. "After doing it over and over, it gets tiring, and eventually you make a mistake. I started looking for some sort of automated miter saw stop, but the ones I found were too large and too expensive for a workshop like mine. They were also produced outside of the EU, which would make replacing parts a hassle. That was when I thought - why not try to make one myself?"

The first Pedante system was built for personal use. A second version was later made for a friend who manufactures PVC windows in his own small workshop, which showed that the same approach could be useful beyond woodworking. This kickstarted the idea, that Pedante could be produced commercially.

"Smaller manufacturers are often overlooked when it comes to automation," Agnis explains. "Large companies can invest in complete industrial production systems, but a smaller workshop may already have a perfectly good saw. They do not necessarily have the space, resources or a reason to replace everything just to automate one part of the process."

For this reason, Pedante was developed as a retrofit solution. It can be attached to an existing saw station and installed and calibrated by the customer in about 10 to 20 minutes.

Instead of manually measuring every part or repeatedly repositioning a mechanical stop, the operator enters the required measurement on the touchscreen and the stop moves to the position automatically. The system also constantly monitors its position and automatically corrects deviations that may occur when material impacts the stop.

"Once it is installed, you can essentially work from a list of measurements and quantities," says Apermanis. "You enter the length, the stop moves into position, you cut. The goal was to remove as much repeated measuring and adjustment as possible."

Development and testing took more than a year. Pedante designs its hardware and software internally; the unit housing, stop block and profile attachments are produced in Latvia. Final assembly and testing take place at the company's headquarters in Salaspils.

Today, Pedante systems are already being used by customers in Latvia, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States and other markets. Customers include various furniture, dormer, terrace, sauna, PVC window, aluminum profile and LED system manufacturers.

SIA "Pedante" is a Latvian manufacturer of automatic length positioning systems for miter saws, developed for small and medium-sized workshops and manufacturers. Founded in 2024, the company designs and assembles its systems in Latvia, combining a motorized length stop with a touchscreen interface and automatic position monitoring. Pedante digital miter saw fences allow operators to enter the required measurement and automatically position the stop with an accuracy of ±0.2 mm, reducing repeated manual measuring and adjustment. Designed as a retrofit solution, it can be installed on existing saw setups without replacing the machinery. Pedante systems are used in woodworking, furniture production, PVC and aluminum profile processing, window manufacturing and other industries. Learn more at https://www.pedante.eu/
