If you had talked to someone in consumer electronics about "infrared" ten years ago, the image that would have come to mind was most likely a TV remote control. This year, the mental map has changed: automotive night vision, AI-powered temperature monitoring, gas leak detection, drone countermeasures, smart home occupancy sensing. The same technology, but its application landscape has quietly expanded several times over. This is not accidental-there are several clear threads of logic behind it.

The "Too Expensive to Use" Problem Was Solved First

For a long time, the adoption of infrared thermal imaging technology was held back by one thing: cost. Cooled infrared detectors cost tens of thousands of yuan, making them viable primarily for military and high-end industrial applications-beyond reach for most ordinary businesses. That landscape has shifted over the past five years, driven by the maturation of uncooled detector technology. Detector costs have dropped by over 60% compared to 2020, while resolution has moved up from the early hundreds of pixels to a mainstream 640 times 480 and beyond. Simultaneous cost reduction and performance improvement is rare in technology products. Typically, you either cut costs at the expense of performance, or maintain performance at a premium price. That infrared detectors have managed to move in both directions at once is thanks to the maturity of MEMS manufacturing and the rapid advancement of domestic supply chain capabilities. With costs down, applications finally have room to scale.

AI Has Given Infrared a New "Interpretation Layer"

Infrared technology itself only solves the "seeing" problem-turning temperature distribution into an image. What to make of that image after it's captured used to rely primarily on human interpretation-efficient? Not really. Error-prone? Definitely.

With AI in the picture, things changed. Target recognition accuracy with AI assistance can exceed 95%, and no one has to stare at thermal frames one by one. In industrial predictive maintenance, where a trained thermography engineer was once required on-site to interpret images, AI algorithms can now automatically identify anomalous temperature patterns-performing 24/7 "health checks" on equipment without pause. To put this in perspective: AI-driven thermal imaging can boost inspection efficiency by up to 300%, while significantly reducing labor costs. For large-scale inspection scenarios-power grid lines, petrochemical pipelines, solar farms-this is transformative.

The Three Fastest-Growing Directions

If we look purely at growth rates, the most interesting increments in infrared today are in three areas.

1. Intelligent Driving. LiDAR suffers from attenuation in fog. Millimeter-wave radar cannot reliably detect pedestrians. Visible-light cameras fail at night. Infrared thermal imaging has structural advantages across all three pain points. Operating in the 8-14m band, thermal imagers can clearly detect the thermal signatures of pedestrians and vehicles hundreds of meters away, even at night and in adverse weather. The global automotive infrared thermal imaging market is projected to grow from $2 billion in 2024 to $6.59 billion by 2030, at a CAGR of over 20%-fast by any automotive component standard.

2. Gas Detection. Industrial leak detection, indoor air quality, toxic gas monitoring in mines-the demand for sensing invisible gases is shifting from "spot checks" to "continuous monitoring." Infrared gas sensing relies on the characteristic absorption of specific infrared wavelengths by gas molecules: CO at 4.26m, methane at 3.3m, CO at 4.67m-each gas has its own unique "infrared fingerprint," with narrowband filters responsible for precisely selecting the corresponding wavelength. This direction does not require large systems-it demands miniaturized, low-power sensing elements, which aligns precisely with the current technological trajectory.

3. Medical and Healthcare. A particularly interesting development: at this year's EuroPerio 11 conference in Vienna, research teams presented experimental results on using infrared thermal imaging for early screening of periodontal disease, achieving 90.7% sensitivity. Medical-grade infrared applications used to be concentrated on surface temperature measurement and vascular imaging. Now they are moving into more differentiated diagnostic scenarios, driven by the same forces of miniaturization and cost reduction.

Where Chinese Companies Stand in This Cycle

Yole's forecast data shows that Chinese infrared thermal imaging manufacturers are expected to increase their global market share to 64%. If realized, this would rewrite the competitive landscape of the global infrared market.

This trend is supported by two conditions. First, the localization rate of detector chips is rising rapidly, and upstream materials and core components are no longer heavily dependent on imports. Second, Chinese companies have already built formidable cost competitiveness in the mid-to-low-end market, and are steadily penetrating the mid-to-high-end segment through sustained R&D investment.

What has actually happened is a gradual process. Costs have crossed the affordability threshold for more and more scenarios. AI has provided a new layer of data interpretation capability. The supply chain has matured and become complete. When these three things align, a technology moves from "capable" to "practical," from "someone is trying it" to "everyone is using it." Infrared is currently somewhere in the middle of that transition. It is not the starting point, nor the finish line. Over the next few years, the frequency with which you encounter infrared sensing in your daily life will increase steadily-most likely in ways you never consciously notice.
