Flame-Retardant Polycarbonate Film refers to a flexible extruded film or thin sheet manufactured primarily from polycarbonate resin and formulated to achieve a specified flammability classification at a stated thickness.
The market mainly includes transparent, translucent, white, black and coloured films with UL 94 VTM or vertical-burning classifications. Products may use conventional, halogen-free, low-halogen or proprietary flame-retardant systems and can incorporate additional electrical-insulation, high-CTI, thermal-resistance, printing, forming or recycled-content properties. The 2025 benchmark ASP is US$7,800 per ton, modeled global sales volume is approximately 95.170k tons, and the estimated average gross margin is approximately 29%.
The upstream industry chain includes polycarbonate resin, recycled polycarbonate, phosphorus-, sulfonate-, silicone- and other flame-retardant systems, anti-dripping agents, thermal stabilizers, pigments, processing aids and protective films. The midstream includes resin compounding, drying, melt extrusion, filtration, calendaring or casting, thickness control, surface texturing, corona treatment, slitting, flammability testing, electrical testing and packaging. The downstream mainly covers consumer electronics, automotive systems, electrical equipment, household appliances, telecommunications, data infrastructure, energy storage and transportation equipment.
Flame-retardant polycarbonate film combines electrical insulation, impact resistance, heat resistance, dimensional stability, printability and formability in a thin flexible structure. It is commonly positioned between electrical components and enclosures, around power modules, behind displays or control panels, and inside battery and power-supply systems.
Flammability performance is strongly thickness-dependent. ORAFOL's transparent RowTec FR, for example, is rated VTM-0 at approximately 0.076-0.102 mm and V-0 at approximately 0.127-0.762 mm, while its black grade reaches V-0 over a different thickness range. This demonstrates why product ratings cannot be separated from thickness and colour.
Thin films that deform during an ordinary vertical test are generally evaluated using the UL 94 VTM method. The test assesses afterflame time, afterglow and burning droplets, but it does not simulate the complete fire behaviour of a finished battery pack, appliance or electronic device. Final equipment still requires enclosure design, spacing, thermal management and system-level compliance.
