The model achieved a correlation above 0.65 for predicted drug release at 72 hours and an F1 score of 0.87 when classifying release-profile types. The study also used Shapley-based explanations to identify which material characteristics had the strongest influence on release behaviour.
This does not remove the need for laboratory testing, stability studies or clinical development. It gives formulation teams a better way to screen material combinations, interpret failed experiments and narrow the number of formulations that must be tested physically.
Long-acting injectable development has traditionally involved repeated adjustments to polymer composition, particle size, drug loading and manufacturing conditions. Explainable models can help scientists understand why a formulation is likely to show an initial burst, delayed release or an incomplete release profile rather than presenting only a numerical prediction.
PrecisionSphere Moves From Platform Promise to Commercial Validation
Lupin's PrecisionSphere program provides a commercial example of how a proprietary drug-delivery platform can become a licensing and partnership asset.
PrecisionSphere was developed by Lupin subsidiary Nanomi B.V. using a proprietary Microsieve process. The technology is designed to manufacture microspheres and nanoparticles with consistent size and shape, supporting more reproducible controlled release and injectability. Lupin describes the process as scalable and adaptable across different therapeutic requirements.
In September 2025, the US Food and Drug Administration approved Lupin's extended-release injectable risperidone, the first approved product developed through Nanomi's long-acting injectable platform. The formulation uses uniform microspheres to provide release over an extended period and received 180-day competitive generic therapy exclusivity.
Lupin subsequently launched a strategic partnership program for PrecisionSphere. The company is inviting collaborations with pharmaceutical businesses seeking longer-acting versions of medicines that are either under development or already commercialized. The partnership model combines formulation technology with regulatory experience, manufacturing capabilities and alliance-management support.
The program shows why drug delivery is becoming part of lifecycle strategy. A validated platform can be applied to several molecules, licensed to external partners and supported through commercial manufacturing rather than remaining limited to an internal research project.
