Discrete Semiconductors Market Reindustrializes Around Silicon Carbide as Governments Target Power-Electronics Supply-Chain Bottlenecks
NEW YORK, July 31, 2026 - The global Discrete Semiconductors Market reached US$ 49.97 billion in 2025 and is expected to reach US$ 175.64 billion by 2035, growing at a CAGR of 14.2% during the forecast period 2026-2035, according to DataM Intelligence.The market is gaining strategic importance as governments and manufacturers seek greater control over the semiconductor devices responsible for switching, regulating and converting electrical power. Unlike the race for advanced processors, the discrete semiconductor opportunity is closely connected to production capacity, mature-node manufacturing, power efficiency, packaging reliability and long-term product availability.

MOSFETs, insulated-gate bipolar transistors, rectifiers, thyristors, Schottky diodes and silicon carbide devices are essential components in electric vehicles, charging stations, solar inverters, industrial motor drives, renewable-energy systems, consumer appliances, defense equipment and data-center power infrastructure.
A shortage of a relatively low-cost power device can delay the production of a vehicle, industrial machine or energy system worth considerably more. This makes wafer availability, packaging capacity, product qualification and regional manufacturing resilience important commercial considerations.
## 2026 Official Developments in Power-Semiconductor Manufacturing
The agreement reflects a shift in semiconductor policy. Government support is no longer concentrated only on advanced logic and memory manufacturing. Power electronics are increasingly recognized as strategic technologies required for transportation, energy security, industrial production and defense readiness.
India is also building a broader power-semiconductor manufacturing base. Government disclosures have outlined several projects covering silicon carbide wafers, discrete devices, power packaging and compound semiconductor manufacturing.
SiCSem Private Limited is developing a silicon carbide semiconductor facility in Odisha with an estimated investment of ₹2,066 crore. The planned facility is expected to produce approximately 5,000 wafers per month and support packaging capacity of around eight million units per month.
Continental Device India Limited is expanding semiconductor production in Punjab through an investment of approximately ₹117 crore. The project will manufacture silicon and silicon carbide MOSFETs, IGBTs, Schottky bypass diodes and transistors.
The expanded facility is expected to have an annual production capacity of approximately 158.38 million discrete semiconductor devices. This capacity can support domestic demand from automotive, renewable-energy, industrial, telecommunications and consumer-electronics manufacturers.
## Silicon Carbide Reshapes Power-Conversion Economics
Silicon remains the most widely used material in discrete semiconductor manufacturing because it is cost-effective, well understood and supported by an established global supply chain. However, silicon carbide is gaining adoption where higher voltage, temperature resistance and switching efficiency can create meaningful system-level benefits.
Silicon carbide devices can operate at higher switching frequencies and temperatures while reducing energy losses. These characteristics can help manufacturers develop smaller power systems with reduced cooling requirements and improved energy efficiency.
The technology is particularly relevant to electric-vehicle traction inverters, onboard chargers, fast-charging stations, solar inverters, battery-energy storage systems and industrial motor drives.
However, the transition will not happen at the same speed across every application. Silicon carbide wafers and manufacturing processes remain more expensive than conventional silicon alternatives. Device manufacturers must balance efficiency improvements against wafer cost, manufacturing yield, qualification requirements and customer pricing expectations.
Advanced silicon MOSFETs and IGBTs will therefore continue to serve large sections of the market. Companies with portfolios covering silicon, silicon carbide and gallium nitride will be better positioned to address different voltage, cost and performance requirements.
## Major Discrete Semiconductor Market Growth Drivers
Vehicle electrification is one of the strongest demand drivers. Electric vehicles require discrete power devices in traction inverters, battery-management systems, onboard chargers, DC-DC converters, lighting systems and auxiliary electronic systems.
Even conventional and hybrid vehicles use more semiconductor devices as steering, braking, pumps, thermal management and safety systems become electronically controlled.
Renewable-energy investment is creating another major growth opportunity. Solar and wind projects depend on inverters and converters to transform variable electricity into usable grid power. Battery storage installations also require reliable switching, conversion and protection devices.
Industrial automation is increasing demand for power MOSFETs, IGBTs, rectifiers and thyristors used in motor drives, robots, factory equipment, welding machines and industrial power supplies.
AI data centers are creating an additional application layer. Electricity must be converted several times before it reaches processors, networking equipment and storage systems. Improving conversion efficiency can reduce electricity consumption, limit heat generation and lower the pressure placed on cooling systems.

## Discrete Semiconductors Market Segmentation
The market can be segmented by device type, semiconductor material, application, end-use industry, voltage range, and manufacturing stage.
Major device categories include:
* Power MOSFETs
* Insulated-gate bipolar transistors
* Bipolar junction transistors
* Rectifiers
* Schottky diodes
* Thyristors
* Silicon carbide discrete devices
* Gallium nitride power devices
MOSFETs hold a major market position because they are used across automotive systems, power supplies, battery equipment, industrial machinery, telecommunications infrastructure and consumer electronics.
By semiconductor material, the market includes silicon, silicon carbide and gallium nitride. Silicon continues to dominate unit volumes, while silicon carbide is gaining value in high-voltage and high-efficiency applications.
Key end-use industries include automotive, industrial manufacturing, renewable energy, consumer electronics, telecommunications, data centers, aerospace and defense.
The supply chain also includes wafer production, front-end fabrication, die processing, assembly, packaging, testing and distribution. Packaging is becoming more important because power density, thermal management and product reliability depend heavily on module design and material selection.
## United States Discrete Semiconductor Market
The United States is rebuilding domestic capacity around power electronics used in industrial systems, transportation, energy infrastructure and defense equipment.
Demand in the United States is supported by electric-vehicle production, data-center expansion, renewable-energy infrastructure, industrial automation and defense modernization.
Qualification will remain a critical consideration. Automotive, aerospace, industrial and defense customers often require extensive reliability testing before approving a new semiconductor supplier or manufacturing location.
