parABnormal Magazine Returns with Haunting Fiction, Poetry, History, and Paranormal Investigation in September 2026 Issue

Issue 31 from Hiraeth Publishing explores haunted places, supernatural encounters, distorted perception, and the darkness hidden beneath familiar surroundings

TULAROSA, N.M., July 30, 2026 - Hiraeth Publishing will release the September 2026 issue of parABnormal Magazine on September 15, presenting a new collection of stories, poetry, articles, and artwork devoted to the strange, supernatural, and unexplained.

Edited by H. David Blalock, the forthcoming issue is Volume VIII, Number 3 and the 31st issue of the quarterly magazine. Its contents range from Appalachian folk horror and haunted hotels to sinister childhood shadows, restless spirits, paranormal investigations, and the science behind one of Florida's most unusual roadside attractions.

The fiction begins with Tim Babbitt's "The Gift-Giver," a journey into the Appalachian mountains where family history, forgotten rituals, and a mysterious collection of wooden carvings lead to a terrifying encounter with something waiting in the forest.

Other featured stories include George Larson's "Chattering Teeth," Melissa MacLeod's "Better Not to Know," Jerome Newsome's "Exterminator in a Floral Dress," Scott Wilder's "The Thing About Tom," Lina O'Bresly's "Chalcaster Hall," DJ Tyrer's "The Asylum Investigation," and Sylvia Son's "We Have a Problem in 201."

Together, the stories explore supernatural threats that emerge from unexpected places: childhood toys, abandoned buildings, family memories, hotel rooms, and the private fears people carry with them. Some approach the paranormal with quiet unease, while others combine horror with dark humor, mystery, or psychological suspense.

The issue's poetry includes "A Quiet Retreat" by Renee Cronley, "Breathe" by AP Ritchey, "La Llorona" by Susan Cannavo, and "The Boy Next Door" by Gabriele Micozzi. These pieces offer brief but powerful glimpses of haunted hotels, nocturnal visitors, legendary spirits, and the lingering presence of the dead.

The September issue also ventures into paranormal history and research. Sonali Roy continues an examination of Flaxman Low, the fictional nineteenth-century "occult psychologist," with a detailed look at "The Story of the Spaniards, Hammersmith." The article considers how supernatural detection, physical evidence, and Victorian ideas about spiritual evil intersect in one of the earliest examples of the occult-investigator story.

"Spook Hill: Where Gravity, History, and Legend Meet" examines the famous gravity hill in Lake Wales, Florida. The article traces Spook Hill's development as a mid-twentieth-century roadside attraction, recounts its changing legends of ghosts, pirates, warriors, and giant alligators, and explains the visual science that causes automobiles to appear to roll uphill.

Also included is a report on Paranormal Raw, the independent British paranormal investigation series whose fifth episode has received international film-festival recognition. The feature looks at the program's investigation of the Portsmouth Arms Hotel and the production team's plans to pursue television opportunities, expand its online audience, and investigate reportedly haunted locations around the world.

Cover artwork for the September issue is by Shawn Howe. Interior artists featured are Paula Hammond, Concetta Franciamore, and Aurora Braga.
