UEA Introduces 5 Gbps Ethernet Capability for Custom Slip Rings

WAVERLY, Iowa. United Equipment Accessories (UEA) today announced that it has successfully demonstrated 5 Gigabit Ethernet communication through a continuously rotating slip ring. The capability gives equipment manufacturers a way to move large volumes of data across a rotating interface without limiting continuous 360-degree rotation.

High-resolution cameras, LiDAR, radar, machine vision systems, and automated machinery all depend on fast, reliable communication while in motion. UEA's 5 Gbps Ethernet capability is aimed directly at that gap.

The capability is not tied to a single catalog item. UEA can incorporate 5 Gbps Ethernet into capsule, through-bore, and fully custom slip ring designs to match the requirements of each application, whether the priority is available space, rotational speed, operating conditions, or circuit count.
Ethernet circuits can also be combined with power, control signals, encoder feedback, coaxial, or fiber optic connections in a single assembly, which simplifies system design and reduces the number of separate rotating interfaces a machine builder has to manage.

Passing 5 Gbps Ethernet through a rotating interface takes more than adding another circuit. Signal quality has to hold up across the entire electrical path. UEA addresses this through controlled impedance, grounding, shielding, precious-metal contacts, and optimized contact geometry, all of which work to reduce electrical noise and maintain reliable communication during rotation. The mechanical design limits the effects of vibration, so performance stays consistent over time.

The capability is well suited to robotics, industrial automation, machine vision, LiDAR, radar, surveillance systems, medical imaging equipment, semiconductor manufacturing, autonomous vehicles, remote inspection systems, and high-speed test equipment. Each of these depends on moving large amounts of information quickly through a rotating joint.

As equipment becomes smarter and more connected, the volume of data passing through rotating systems continues to grow. Combining high-speed Ethernet with power and other signal types in a single rotating assembly gives designers room to build for current requirements while leaving headroom for future capacity.
