Interstaff Opens Legal Intake Service to U.S. Law Firms, Publishes Research Series on Missed Calls

LOS ANGELES, CA - July 29, 2026 - Interstaff, a Los Angeles staffing and automation company, has opened its intake service to U.S. law firms and published the first episode of a video series examining why firms lose prospective clients before anyone meets them.

Answer rates have been falling. Clio's 2024 Legal Trends Report secret shopped 500 U.S. firms and found roughly 40 percent picked up the phone for a prospective client, down from 56 percent in 2019. Most people who reach voicemail hang up without leaving a message and call somewhere else.

The series, called The Intake Autopsy, opens one firm's week of incoming calls and names four places leads disappear. A firm can check all four itself, in an afternoon, without hiring anyone.

Start with the calls nobody picked up. Pull last month's log and count how many rang out after hours or while everyone was in a hearing. Most owners guess low.

Then look at speed. Research from MIT found the odds of qualifying a lead are 21 times higher when someone calls back within five minutes instead of thirty. Harvard Business Review, studying more than a million leads, put the average business response at 47 hours.

Ownership is harder to see. Pick five leads from last week and ask who was responsible for the second contact. If the answer is the front desk, or whoever noticed first, then nobody was.

Last, count the touches after that first attempt. Most firms stop at one, on the theory that a serious client will call back. Serious clients call somewhere else.

"Most firms think they have a lead problem," an Interstaff spokesperson said. "They have a follow-up problem, and you cannot fix what you have not measured."

Interstaff's own service begins with a 15-minute review tracing the path from first ring to booked consultation. The firm keeps the resulting document. Trained legal assistants then handle the calls that need a person, while Monica, an AI voice agent, covers nights, weekends, and the moments when staff are already on another line. Monica operates under a Business Associate Agreement, the privacy standard used for handling protected health information.

The company has run the service inside small and mid-sized businesses, including law firms, before opening it to the legal market more widely.

"The gap is almost never where an owner expects it," said Adriana Vela, who hosts the series. "It usually comes down to one line that went unanswered on a Friday evening, and a callback that nobody ever owned."
