How Custom Cabinetry Adds Long Term Value to Australian Home Renovations
A kitchen renovation is one of the few home upgrades that has to work twice: once for the people living there, and once for whoever buys the place next. Revelation Cabinets, a residential and commercial cabinetry firm based in Melbourne's south-east, today detailed why custom-built cabinetry is increasingly outperforming project-home kitchens on long-term value, not just appearance, as more Melbourne homeowners renovate rather than sell in the current property market.Melbourne's middle-ring suburbs are full of homes from the 1950s through the 1980s, brick veneer and weatherboard houses with kitchens that were often the smallest, cheapest room to fit out when the house was built. Many have since had at least one budget refresh, usually a straight swap of cabinet doors and a new benchtop rather than a genuine rethink of the space. That approach can freshen a kitchen for a few years. It rarely changes how well the room actually works, and it does very little for what a buyer's agent or appraiser will say about the house down the track.

It's right in the middle of that gap where the value argument for custom cabinetry comes into play. A kitchen that's built based on a family's lifestyle, instead of a standard floor plan used throughout a project-home development will be more appealing for a longer time, simply because it was never intended for marketing to an average buyer. It was designed for the inhabitants, paradoxically a quality that makes it look more attractive to the general public when the house is finally put on the market.
"We always start by asking what people actually do in their kitchen, not what they think a nice kitchen is supposed to look like," said Revelation Cabinets Experts. "A family that entertains twice a week needs a completely different layout to a couple who barely cook. Once you design around the real answer, the value follows on its own."

Revelation Cabinets operates in three main kitchen styles, each with a different budget range that corresponds to the amount of customisation that will be involved. Quite a few $10,000 to $15,000 minimalist, all-white contemporary kitchens exist. Two tone melamine kitchens in a classic style range from $15,000-25,000. The most labour-intensive of the three, shaker style, hand-painted farmhouse kitchens typically vary in price from $15,000 to 35,000. Every project begins with a design consultation rather than a catalogue order, taking into account lighting, layout, storage needs and the household's actual lifestyle before a single cabinet is drawn up.
That consultation process is also where the value case gets made or lost, according to the company. A kitchen that doesn't take into account how a family actually uses the space, no matter how it looks on install day will likely need to be adjusted within a couple years, whether it's additional storage, reworked bench height or a space that just never felt right for how people move in the room. The key to a successful renovation is doing it right the first time.
"There is a perception that it's really about aesthetics, and then there is a much bigger part of it which is the stuff nobody sees, it's the drawer that's exactly where you reach for it. It's not having to explain to a buyer why the pantry is in a strange spot. Good design is mostly invisible, and that's precisely why it holds value so well."
The same design-first approach extends into the company's commercial work, including office fit-outs, retail stores and school and education facilities across Melbourne, where the brief is less about resale value and more about how a space performs for staff, customers or students every single day. On the residential side, Revelation Cabinets is also seeing more requests for wardrobes and laundry storage designed with the same lifestyle-first process as its kitchens, rather than as an afterthought once the kitchen budget is spent.
Marcus Whelan, a Bentleigh East homeowner who had a kitchen overhaul by Revelation Cabinets this year, said he had renovated to suit his needs, and that he knew he would be living in his home for another 15 years. But since then, said everyone who has seen it, it doesn't look like it's been renovated, it looks like it was meant to be there. That's apparently rarer than I thought.
Revelation Cabinets says the next one to two years will focus on expanding its design consultation capacity to meet growing demand across greater Melbourne, alongside continued growth in its commercial fit-out work for retail, hospitality, education and office clients. The company is also placing more emphasis on sustainably sourced materials as clients increasingly ask about the environmental footprint of a renovation, not just its price tag.
