Educator-Author Kerry Espey Releases Not Yet, a Picture Book to Support Kids Through Big Feelings and Growth
Clinton, Iowa - July 22, 2026 - Kerry Espey, an author and educator, has released her debut picture book Not Yet, written to help children process big feelings while reinforcing patience, resilience, and hope. The book's guiding message-"not yet doesn't mean never"-offers a gentle framework for kids learning that growth takes time and that love can carry us through change. The story follows a girl and her mom through life's stages, showing how everyday moments build emotional strength. Early on, the mother's "not yet" helps the child practice responsibility and self-control. Later, it becomes guidance around independence, boundaries, and decision-making.
As the narrative progresses, the book also opens a compassionate doorway for discussing grief and caregiving with age-appropriate language. Espey shared that she hopes the story helps families and educators create space for children to name emotions, ask questions, and feel supported.
"I am an author and educator who created a heartfelt story to help little kids understand big feelings," Espey said. "I hope that when readers finish my book, they feel something in their hearts."
Suggested Use for Schools & Families
While Not Yet is not a curriculum, it can support read-aloud conversations around:
· patience and self-control ("not yet" as a pause)
· resilience and hope (growth over time)
· family love and memory-keeping
· feelings around aging, change, and loss
Parents, caregivers, teachers, and librarians may find the story helpful as a starting point for discussions about perseverance, kindness, empathy, and the importance of supporting one another during times of change. Its simple message encourages children to see setbacks as temporary and to recognize that progress looks different for everyone. Rather than focusing on immediate outcomes, the story emphasizes the value of persistence, love, and encouragement throughout life's journey.
With its heartfelt storytelling and relatable themes, Not Yet aims to become a valuable addition to home libraries, classrooms, and community reading programs. Espey hopes the book will inspire children to approach challenges with confidence, remind families that every stage of growth has meaning, and encourage readers of all ages to embrace the idea that "not yet" is not the end of the story, but the beginning of new possibilities.
