RFID Frequency Bands Worldwide - Specifications and Industry

With the rapid development of global digital supply chains and the Internet of Things (IoT), RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology has become a crucial component in industries such as logistics, manufacturing, retail, healthcare, warehousing, and asset management. However, many companies find that different countries use different RFID frequency bands when procuring RFID tags, readers, or deploying multinational RFID projects.

In reality, RFID operating frequencies are restricted by the radio management regulations of different countries. The frequency bands, transmission power, and communication protocols available vary between countries and regions. If companies are unaware of global RFID frequency band specifications, the purchased RFID products may malfunction, even impacting the overall project implementation.

Why are RFID frequency bands so important?

An RFID system mainly consists of RFID tags, RFID readers, and a back-end management system. The operating frequency of the RFID tag directly determines the reading distance, communication speed, anti-interference capability, and applicable scenarios. Different frequency RFID products use different wireless communication methods; therefore, no single RFID tag is suitable for all industries.

Furthermore, radio regulatory agencies in different countries have established different specifications for RFID frequency bands. Therefore, global RFID products typically need to be customized according to the target market.

What are the main RFID frequency bands?

Currently, global RFID is mainly divided into three frequency bands: LF (Low Frequency), HF (High Frequency), and UHF (Ultra-High Frequency). In addition, some active RFID uses microwave frequencies, but its market application is relatively limited.

LF RFID: LF RFID primarily operates around 125kHz or 134.2kHz and is one of the earliest commercially available RFID bands. Due to the longer wavelength of low-frequency signals, it has strong penetration capabilities and maintains good stability even in environments with moisture, people, or some metals. However, its reading distance is typically only a few centimeters to ten centimeters, and its data transmission speed is relatively slow.

HF RFID [https://www.rfidtagworld.com/products/Self-destructive-tag/Tamper-HF-NFC-Tag/Tamper-HF-NFC-Tag_5558.html]: HF RFID operates at a standardized frequency of 13.56MHz, making it the most standardized type of RFID product globally. Since the international ISO standard has standardized the HF RFID frequency, almost all countries can directly use 13.56MHz RFID products without needing frequency adjustments for different regions.

The biggest feature of HF RFID is its compatibility with smartphones; therefore, NFC technology is widely used in mobile payments, electronic tickets, digital business cards, and brand anti-counterfeiting systems.

UHF RFID [https://www.rfidtagworld.com/products/Self-destructive-tag/Tamper-UHF-Tag/Tamper-UHF-Tag_4936.html]: UHF RFID operates at frequencies between 860MHz and 960MHz, and it is currently the fastest-growing RFID market globally.

Among the three RFID frequency bands, UHF RFID boasts the longest reading distance, the fastest data transmission speed, and batch reading capabilities, making it a core technology for modern logistics, warehouse automation, and supply chain management.

However, UHF RFID also exhibits the greatest frequency band variation globally.

Although the international standard adopts EPC Gen2 (ISO18000-63), the frequency ranges available in different regions are not entirely consistent.

COUNTRY / REGION
UHF RFID FREQUENCY BAND

Europe
865-868 MHz

United States
902-928 MHz

Canada
902-928 MHz

China
920.5-924.5 MHz

Japan
916.8-923.4 MHz

South Korea
917-923.5 MHz

India
865-867 MHz

Australia
920-926 MHz

Singapore
920-925 MHz

While these frequency differences may seem small (only a few MHz), they directly impact RFID antenna design and reading performance. Therefore, Xminnov typically optimizes RFID antenna size and matching parameters for different markets to ensure optimal reading results.

Why is there no global standard for UHF RFID frequency bands?

The main reason for this difference is the varying allocation of radio resources across countries. Each country allocates radio spectrum for broadcasting, television, mobile communications, satellite, aviation, and industrial equipment. Therefore, RFID can only operate within the permitted open frequency bands. For example, the US FCC allows RFID to use 902-928MHz, so most RFID tags in the US market are designed around 915MHz. The European ETSI allows 865-868MHz, so European RFID products are often called 868MHz tags.

For exporting companies, purchasing RFID tags in the wrong frequency band, even with the same chip, can lead to a significant decrease in reading distance and prevent normal identification.

What issues should be considered when deploying RFID projects globally?

More and more multinational companies are building globally unified RFID supply chains, such as in international retail, e-commerce logistics, automotive manufacturing, and medical device management. These projects typically need to consider the following aspects:

First, the RFID regulations of the countries covered by the project should be confirmed. If the same batch of RFID tags needs to be exported to multiple countries, it is recommended to prioritize UHF RFID products that support wideband operation to improve compatibility.

Second, the transmission power and operating channel of the RFID reader need to be configured according to different regions. Modern fixed RFID readers generally support software switching of parameters for different countries, which can reduce equipment replacement costs.

In addition, the directionality of the RFID antenna, the installation environment, and the tag material also need to be considered. For metal shelves, liquid packaging, or high-temperature environments, choose dedicated Anti-Metal RFID Tags, high-temperature resistant RFID Tags, or flexible RFID Tags to ensure reading stability.
