Ahead of Self-Care Day, Cassandra James Says Rest Isn't the Answer - Women Need to Reconnect With What They Actually Want

International Self-Care Day arrives July 24th with its usual chorus: rest more, breathe deeper, drink water. Cassandra James, founder of The Cassandra James, a personal transformation brand for high achievers, says that message is incomplete.
"Self-care culture told women to rest," James says. "It never told them to want."
According to James, the modern self-care conversation has become a maintenance routine - a way to keep women functional, not fulfilled. Bubble baths and breathing exercises soothe the nervous system, she says, but they don't address the deeper pattern she sees in the women she works with: a long-practiced habit of setting their own desires aside in favor of everyone else's comfort.
"Most of the women I work with can tell you exactly what their partner needs, what their kids need, what their boss needs," James says. "Ask them what they want, and there's a pause. That pause is the problem self-care culture never touches."
James built Permission to Reconnect with Yourself, a free guided audio, in response to that pause. Unlike a standard relaxation track, the eleven-minute experience is structured to help listeners name desires they've buried - under obligation, under the pressure to be agreeable, under years of being told that wanting things was selfish.
James describes the audio as a starting point, not a fix. "This isn't about becoming a new person," she says. "It's about giving the woman who's always been there permission to speak again."
