As Unsecured Debt Gets More Expensive, United Debt Relief Explains the Three Paths to Resolve It: Consolidate, Settle, or Validate

Unsecured debt in 2026: $1.25T in card balances at 21%+ APR. Consolidate, settle, or validate: the three paths to resolve it.
United Debt Relief, a national debt relief broker and referral service based in San Diego and serving all 50 states, says the problem for most households is not knowing that help exists, but knowing which kind of help fits their situation.
"People lump all debt together, but unsecured debt is really its own problem, and it has three different fixes depending on where you stand," said Nick Avila, Founder of United Debt Relief. "If you can still keep up but the interest is burying you, you consolidate. If you genuinely cannot repay the balance, that is a settlement conversation. If a collector cannot even prove the debt is yours, you validate. Most people are never told there is a difference, so they apply the wrong fix or freeze and do nothing."
Path one: a debt consolidation loan, when you can pay but the rate is the enemy. For households that are still current but losing ground to interest, the issue is often the rate, not the payment. A debt consolidation loan rolls several high-rate balances into a single fixed-rate loan with one payment and a clear payoff date. The gap is large: a 24-month personal loan at a bank averaged about 11.40% in 2026, according to the Federal Reserve, compared with more than 21% on the typical credit card. Lowering the rate is what lets more of each payment reach the balance instead of the interest.
Path two: debt settlement, for what you owe but cannot repay. When unsecured balances have outgrown what a household can realistically pay, debt settlement is a negotiated resolution for less than the full balance owed. It applies to unsecured debt such as credit cards, personal loans, and medical bills, and it is built for people who are not just behind for a month but are structurally unable to catch up. United Debt Relief connects these consumers with a vetted, BBB-accredited and A-rated network of settlement professionals. Outcomes depend on the creditor, the balance, and the household's circumstances, and results vary.
Path three: debt validation, for what a collector cannot prove. A large share of collection activity involves debts consumers say they do not actually owe, whether from an error, a debt already paid, or an account that was never theirs. Under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, a consumer has the right to demand that a collector validate a debt before paying anything on it.
"The part people get backwards is the burden of proof," Avila said. "You do not have to prove the debt is not yours. The collector has to prove it is. If they cannot, you may not owe it at all. Validation is not a loophole, it is a right, and it is free to exercise."
United Debt Relief notes that a household can start on its own before ever picking up the phone: list every unsecured balance, rate, and collector in one place; direct any extra payment to the highest-rate balance first; and, for any debt that feels unfamiliar or already settled, send a written validation request rather than paying on it. From there, the right path depends on whether the household can carry the debt at a better rate, cannot carry it at all, or is not sure the debt is even theirs.
"No honest company can promise to erase your debt or hand you a specific result," Avila added. "What we can do is help you understand which of the three paths actually fits, without pressure, and connect you with people who do this the right way. We are a broker and referral service, we charge no upfront consultation fees, and results vary. We say that plainly."
