For example, an owner may introduce additional approval steps because the business appears to be spending too much. However, the real issue may be delayed customer payments, an overlooked recurring charge, or money distributed across several accounts. Without visibility, the new approval process may slow the business without addressing the actual cause of the problem.

Financial visibility starts with answering a few basic questions: How much cash is available today? What payments are expected to arrive? Which invoices remain unpaid? What obligations are due next?

Once business owners can answer those questions accurately, Nelli says they can make more targeted decisions about spending limits, payment approvals, budgets, and access permissions.

Nelli is not arguing that financial control is unnecessary. Controls remain important for reducing unauthorized spending, protecting company funds, and maintaining accountability. The issue is the order in which businesses introduce them.

Visibility identifies where control is needed. Control then helps the business act on that information.

Nelli also believes businesses should avoid using additional rules to compensate for disconnected financial systems. When account information, invoices, payment activity, and outstanding obligations exist in separate places, leaders may spend more time collecting information than making decisions.

A clearer financial picture can reduce that uncertainty. It allows businesses to apply controls where genuine risks exist instead of creating broad restrictions that affect every payment and employee.
