What is Celiac Disease?
Celiac Disease, also known as gluten-sensitive enteropathy, is a chronic autoimmune disorder in which ingestion of gluten triggers an abnormal immune response, resulting in inflammation and damage to the small intestine. The disease affects nutrient absorption and can cause a wide range of gastrointestinal and systemic manifestations.
Common symptoms include chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, nausea, fatigue, anemia, joint pain, headaches, and neurological complications. In children, Celiac Disease may also result in delayed growth and behavioral changes. The disease affects approximately 0.5% to 1% of the global population and is more common among individuals with autoimmune disorders such as Type 1 Diabetes. First-degree relatives of affected patients face a significantly increased risk of developing the condition.
Although a strict gluten-free diet remains the standard of care, the growing burden of disease and challenges associated with long-term dietary adherence are driving innovation within the Celiac Disease drug market and treatment landscape.
Emerging Celiac Disease Drug Profiles
TAK-101: Takeda
TAK-101 is an investigational immune tolerization therapy designed to restore immune tolerance to gluten in patients with Celiac Disease. The therapy consists of gluten proteins encapsulated within polymer-based nanoparticles and is administered intravenously. Once delivered to the spleen and liver, TAK-101 promotes immune tolerance mechanisms that prevent harmful immune responses against gluten.
The therapy has demonstrated significant reductions in gluten-induced immune activation and is currently being evaluated in Phase II clinical development for Celiac Disease.
FB102: Forte Biosciences
FB102 is a monoclonal antibody therapy currently being developed in Phase II clinical studies. The therapy has emerged as one of the most promising candidates in the Celiac Disease pipeline and recently received Fast Track Designation from the FDA, highlighting its potential to address significant unmet needs in the treatment landscape.
IMU-856: Immunic Therapeutics
IMU-856 is an orally administered small-molecule therapy currently progressing through Phase I development. The candidate is designed to support intestinal barrier function and represents a novel therapeutic approach within the Celiac Disease treatment market.
VTP-1000: Barinthus Biotherapeutics
VTP-1000 is a gluten-derived peptide immunotherapy currently being evaluated in Phase I clinical development. The therapy is designed to enhance regulatory immune responses while suppressing pathogenic effector T-cell activity associated with gluten exposure.

• In December 2025, Barinthus Biotherapeutics provided an update from its first-in-human Phase I trial of VTP-1000, with additional clinical data expected during the second half of 2026.
• In September 2025, Forte Biosciences presented additional clinical findings supporting FB102's ability to prevent histological damage and mitigate gluten challenge-induced symptoms in patients with Celiac Disease.
• In January 2026, Royalty Pharma and Teva Pharmaceuticals announced a funding agreement of up to USD 500 million to accelerate development of anti-IL-15 antibody TEV-408 for immune-mediated diseases, including potential autoimmune indications.
• TAK-101 completed its Phase II clinical trial in January 2026 following enrollment of 102 participants, further advancing the immune tolerance treatment approach in Celiac Disease.

Celiac disease market: Global Trends and Forecast Analysis 2025
Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder in which the surface of the small intestine is damaged by a protein called gluten. Gluten is found in rye, barley, and wheat. Gluten triggers an immune reaction in the small intestine damaging the villi (small finger-like projections in the small intestine which promote absorption). The damage restricts the ability of the body to absorb proteins, nutrients, fats, vitamins, carbohydrates, and minerals. Eventually, this…
