Taal Volcano

Taal Volcano

VOLCANIANS
A film by Herve Jaubert
Available on digital platforms
On the shores of one of the world's most dangerous volcanoes, an entire community chooses to call home the very thing that could destroy it. Volcanians is a cinematic journey into the lives of the people who live in the shadow of Taal Volcano, in the Philippines, one of the most active and lethal volcanoes on Earth.
Volcanians is a documentary that captures the extraordinary contrast between paradise and peril. At its center is Taal, a volcano rising as an island from the middle of a vast lake formed 150,000 years ago, a place that has erupted three separate times in the last sixty years, and remains one of the most closely watched volcanoes on the planet.
The film opens with breathtaking aerial footage of the crater itself: a scorched, Mars-like landscape of dry gullies, ash-streaked slopes, and hardened mineral layers cemented together by centuries of rain and heat. It's a place so hostile that the filmmaker Herve Jaubert and his crew lost a drone to the volcano's own heat while filming above its steaming lake.
But two kilometers across the water, the story shifts entirely. Here, half a million people live, work, and thrive - not despite the volcano, but because of it. Volcanians introduces us to the boaters, the resort owners, the farmers, the families who fill the bars and terraces with live music and laughter every night, all within full view of a fuming crater. Their homes, hotels, and businesses flourish within just five kilometers of the volcano's edge.
Through their eyes, the film asks a question that echoes far beyond Taal: why do people choose to live with danger? The answer, Volcanians reveals, isn't recklessness, it's relationship. Tourism, agriculture, commerce, and community have grown up around Taal for generations. For the people who live there, the volcano isn't a threat to escape. It's a livelihood, a landscape, a way of life passed down and impossible to simply leave behind.
Volcanians is more than a portrait of one place, it's a meditation on how humanity everywhere negotiates risk. Nearly 500 million people around the world live in the shadow of active volcanoes; two million of them call the Philippines home. Add in the millions more who live with hurricanes, wildfires, earthquakes, and floods, and Taal becomes a lens for a universal truth: risk and reward are inseparable, and moving away is rarely as simple as it sounds.
Shot with sweeping drone cinematography, Volcanians delivers imagery rarely captured on film, the eerie beauty of the crater lake, the jagged rims of over a dozen ancient craters, and the sharp visual line between desolation and life. It is a film of contrasts: scorched earth beside verdant ridges, quiet danger beside vibrant celebration.
