Report Crypto ATM Fraud: How to Trace Lost Funds (New Update)

Austin, Texas, 10-07-2026 - InvestorWarnings.com has released a new guide on crypto asset recovery.

As cryptocurrency ATMs become increasingly common across the United States, criminals are exploiting these machines to collect payments from victims of financial fraud. Consumers who discover that they have deposited cash into a crypto ATM and sent cryptocurrency to a fraudster-controlled wallet are being urged to report the incident quickly, preserve transaction records, and provide detailed information to law enforcement agencies and the crypto ATM operator.

According to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), cryptocurrency kiosk fraud remains a significant consumer protection concern. In 2025, IC3 received more than 13,400 complaints involving cryptocurrency kiosks, with reported losses exceeding $388 million.

The FBI reported that complaints increased by 23% and losses increased by 58% compared with 2024. More than half of the complaints involved individuals over the age of 50.
These figures highlight the importance of knowing how to report crypto ATM fraud and what information victims should preserve after discovering a fraudulent transaction.

How Crypto ATM Fraud Typically Happens

Crypto ATM fraud often begins with an unexpected phone call, text message, email, social media communication, or computer pop-up. The person contacting the victim may claim to represent a bank, government agency, technology company, law enforcement organization, investment firm, or cryptocurrency business.

The fraudster may claim that the victim's bank account has been compromised, that taxes or fines must be paid immediately, that a family member is in trouble, or that money must be moved to a supposedly secure cryptocurrency wallet.

Victims are then instructed to withdraw cash from their bank accounts and visit a cryptocurrency ATM.
At the machine, the fraudster may provide a QR code representing a cryptocurrency wallet address. When the victim scans the QR code and deposits cash, the cryptocurrency purchased through the ATM is transferred to the wallet controlled by the fraudster.

Once the cryptocurrency transaction is confirmed, reversing the payment can be extremely difficult.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns that government agencies and legitimate businesses do not demand cryptocurrency payments through Bitcoin ATMs or instruct consumers to move money to cryptocurrency wallets for protection.

Report Crypto ATM Fraud Immediately
Consumers who believe they have been victims of crypto ATM fraud should act as quickly as possible.
The first step is to stop communicating with the suspected fraudster and avoid sending additional money.
Fraudster frequently contact victims again after an initial payment. They may claim that additional deposits are required to release funds, pay taxes, complete verification procedures, unlock accounts, or recover previously stolen cryptocurrency.

Victims should not make additional payments based on these claims.
The next step is to contact the cryptocurrency ATM operator using the official customer support information listed on the machine, transaction receipt, or operator's verified website.
Victims should provide the operator with transaction details and explain that the cryptocurrency transfer resulted from suspected fraud.

Depending on the circumstances, the operator may be able to review transaction records, preserve account information, identify the destination wallet address, or provide information requested by law enforcement.

Reporting the incident quickly does not guarantee that cryptocurrency will be recovered. However, early reporting may help preserve important evidence and provide investigators with information that could assist broader fraud investigations.

File a Report With the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center
Victims of cryptocurrency ATM fraud should consider filing a complaint with the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center.
IC3 serves as the FBI's central reporting platform for internet-enabled crime and cryptocurrency fraud complaints. Information submitted through IC3 may be analyzed and shared with appropriate federal, state, local, or international law enforcement agencies.

The FBI advises cryptocurrency fraud victims to submit reports promptly and provide as much transaction information as possible.
Victims can file a complaint through the official FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center.
Report Cryptocurrency Fraud to the FTC
Consumers can also report crypto ATM fraud to the Federal Trade Commission.

The FTC collects reports about fraud, fraud, deceptive business practices, and suspicious financial activity. These reports contribute to consumer protection investigations and help authorities identify emerging fraud trends.
The FTC recommends reporting cryptocurrency fraud to the agency, the FBI's IC3, relevant financial regulators when appropriate, and the cryptocurrency company involved in sending the transaction.

Contact Local Law Enforcement
Victims should also consider filing a police report with their local law enforcement agency.
A police report creates an official record of the incident and may be useful when communicating with banks, cryptocurrency ATM operators, exchanges, insurance providers, attorneys, or other organizations involved in reviewing the case.

Victims should provide investigators with copies of transaction receipts, cryptocurrency wallet addresses, transaction IDs, communications with the fraudster, phone numbers, email addresses, social media profiles, websites, and any other available evidence.

What Information Should Be Included in a Crypto ATM Fraud Report?

Detailed documentation can make a fraud report more useful to investigators and compliance teams.
Victims should preserve the crypto ATM transaction receipt, date and time of the transaction, amount of cash deposited, cryptocurrency purchased, destination wallet address, blockchain transaction ID or transaction hash, name and location of the crypto ATM operator, phone numbers used by the fraudster, email addresses, website domains, social media accounts, text messages, screenshots, and payment instructions.

Victims should also write a chronological description of what happened.
The report should explain how the fraudster first made contact, what claims were made, why the victim was instructed to withdraw cash, how the crypto ATM was selected, who provided the destination wallet address or QR code, and whether additional payments were requested.
Even small details may help investigators connect a complaint to other reports involving the same wallet addresses, phone numbers, websites, or criminal organizations.

Preserve Blockchain Transaction Information
Cryptocurrency transactions are recorded on public blockchains, which means transaction activity may remain visible after funds have been transferred.
Victims should preserve wallet addresses, transaction hashes, timestamps, cryptocurrency amounts, and screenshots of blockchain explorer records.
Blockchain transaction records may help investigators and qualified blockchain analysts examine the movement of cryptocurrency between addresses.

However, tracing cryptocurrency transactions does not automatically mean that funds can be recovered.
Recovery generally depends on several factors, including whether funds reach an identifiable cryptocurrency exchange or service provider, whether law enforcement becomes involved, whether the relevant service cooperates with investigators, and whether legal procedures allow assets to be frozen or seized.

Consumers should be cautious of anyone who guarantees cryptocurrency recovery.
Beware of Crypto Recovery Fraud
Victims who publicly discuss cryptocurrency losses may become targets of additional fraud.
Fraudsters may claim to be blockchain investigators, attorneys, hackers, government agents, cryptocurrency recovery companies, or representatives of regulatory organizations.

They may promise guaranteed recovery in exchange for upfront fees, taxes, wallet activation payments, software purchases, or additional cryptocurrency transfers.
Victims should independently verify the identity, credentials, physical location, and business history of any individual or organization offering assistance.
No legitimate organization can guarantee that stolen cryptocurrency will be recovered.

Why Reporting Crypto ATM Fraud Matters
Some victims hesitate to report cryptocurrency fraud because they feel embarrassed, believe the amount lost is too small, or assume that nothing can be done after cryptocurrency has been transferred.
However, reporting provides valuable information to investigators.

Wallet addresses, transaction records, telephone numbers, websites, email accounts, and other evidence from individual complaints may help authorities identify patterns involving multiple victims.

The FBI states that reports submitted through IC3 are used for investigative and intelligence purposes and that rapid reporting may support efforts to recover lost funds in some circumstances.

Consumer Awareness Remains Critical
The continuing growth of cryptocurrency ATM fraud demonstrates the importance of public awareness and consumer education.

Consumers should be suspicious whenever someone unexpectedly demands payment through a cryptocurrency ATM, creates urgency, instructs them to keep the transaction secret, claims money must be moved to a secure wallet, or provides a QR code for depositing funds.
Legitimate government agencies, banks, and law enforcement organizations do not instruct consumers to deposit cash into cryptocurrency ATMs to protect their money.

Anyone who believes they have been targeted by crypto ATM fraud should stop sending money, preserve all available evidence, contact the ATM operator, notify relevant financial institutions, file reports with appropriate authorities, and remain alert for follow-up recovery fraud.

Crypto ATM fraud can result in significant financial losses, but reporting the incident quickly and preserving detailed transaction information can provide law enforcement agencies, financial institutions, and cryptocurrency businesses with valuable evidence.

Victims should document the transaction, preserve wallet addresses and blockchain records, contact the cryptocurrency ATM operator, report the incident to local law enforcement, submit a complaint to the FBI's IC3, and notify the Federal Trade Commission when appropriate.

While reporting fraud does not guarantee the recovery of cryptocurrency, timely action may improve the chances of preserving evidence, identifying related transactions, and assisting authorities in investigating broader criminal networks.

As cryptocurrency payment systems continue to evolve, consumer education, rapid fraud reporting, and cooperation between law enforcement agencies, cryptocurrency businesses, and financial institutions remain important components of combating crypto ATM fraud.
