Blues Music Award Nod for Brian Walton's "What the Hell!"
Today, team BGW is proud to announce that Brian Walton's "What the Hell!" is under consideration for the 2027 Blues Foundation Song of the Year Award. If nominated, this will mark the song's first nomination from a prestigious organization and Brian's 27th nomination as an artist.Originally composed in 2009 as part of the soundtrack for the documentary "An American Obsession," Brian added vocals and released the single later that year. The song quickly gained traction, buoyed by the documentary's success, and climbed the blues charts, reaching the Top 100 in its release year. During Brian's 2010 tour with the Toad House Band, they featured "What the Hell!," which then rose to the Top 25 on the charts. Since then, the song has received multiple songwriting awards from the Society of Composers and Lyricists (SCL) and the Songwriters Guild of America (SGA). Additionally, variations of the song have appeared in Disney's "The Mandalorian" and "Andor."
Brian is an award-winning artist, composer, and producer who began his career in the 80s at A&R Recording, working under the watchful eye of the legendary producer Phil Ramone and collaborating with superstars Billy Joel, Burt Bacharach, and Liza Minelli. He then moved to Capitol Records, where he collaborated on Spielberg's "Schindler's List" and Polanski's "Ninth Gate" before launching a highly successful solo career as a recording artist. Brian has more than 450 published works that have either been recorded by other famous artists or featured in film and television more than 1,400 times, more than any other composer since 1989, according to the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP).
