BLACK LIVES MATTER GREATER ATLANTA LEGALLY CONTRACTED AS VICTIM ADVOCATE/SPOKES ORGANIZATION FOR ANTHONY WALTERS & THE WALTERS FAMILY
Atlanta, Georgia – March 3rd, 2017– Black Lives Matter, Greater Atlanta Inc. (BLMGA) announced its official role today as advocate spokes-organization on behalf of Anthony Walters and the Walters Family.
On Oct 15th, 2016, Anthony Walter alleged he was viciously attacked and severely beaten by Atlanta Police Detective, Yasin Abdulahad at an entertainment venue in Midtown Atlanta.
In early December 2016, Anthony Walters contacted BLMGA seeking representation for a police brutality lawsuit. BLMGA agreed to represent the case after careful examination of the police report and eye witness accounts.
In January of 2017, BLMGA presented a 15 page Freedom of Information Act Package to the Atlanta Police Department demanding all documentation related to the Anthony Walters Case. BLMGA officials were told files were ready for pick up, subsequently APD Public Affairs Director, Elizabeth Espy, denied BLMGA’s request stating there was a pending investigation.
It was later discovered the same police officer accused of assaulting Mr. Walters is the same officer who shot and killed 24-year-old Deaundre Phillips in late January.
After consulting attorneys, BLMGA made the decision to refer the case to Civil Rights and Trial Attorneys L. Chris Stewart and Riah Greathouse, who now represent Mr. Walters.
