McCandless Well Drilling and Services: 50 Years, 3 Generations of Trusted Well Water Testing & Treatment Across Western NY and Northwestern PA

A new analysis of private well water across Western New York and Northwestern Pennsylvania found 73% of tested wells had at least one treatable issue-most often hard water, iron, and sediment-yet only 21% of homeowners had treatment. McCandless Well Drilling and Services reviewed 350+ well tests across four counties: untreated hard water cuts appliance and plumbing lifespan by 42%, 1 in 3 wells were never tested, and acidic groundwater is corroding pipes region-wide.
Nearly three-quarters of private wells across Western New York and Northwestern Pennsylvania show at least one treatable water quality problem, yet only about one in five homeowners has installed a treatment system to address it, according to a new well water analysis by McCandless Well Drilling and Services. More on private well water quality in the region is available at https://mccandlesswelldrilling.com/blog/private-well-water-quality-western-ny-nw-pa/ [https://mccandlesswelldrilling.com/blog/private-well-water-quality-western-ny-nw-pa/].

The study also found that a third of surveyed wells had never undergone a water quality test, leaving many households unaware of hardness, iron, or bacterial issues that quietly damage plumbing, stain fixtures, and shorten the life of costly appliances until a problem becomes visible.

Mini Methods

The McCandless Well Drilling and Services analysis reviewed more than 350 residential private well water tests and service records across its Western NY and Northwestern PA service area, including Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties in New York and Erie and Warren counties in Pennsylvania. The study examined common well water quality parameters-hardness, iron and manganese, sediment, pH and acidity, and bacterial presence-and compared results against treatment status, appliance and plumbing lifespan, and total household water-related repair costs. Wells were grouped by whether they had documented testing and whether a treatment system was installed.

Top Results

Widespread Treatable Issues: 73% of tested private wells in the region showed at least one treatable water quality problem, with hard water the single most common finding, followed by elevated iron and suspended sediment that stains fixtures and clogs plumbing.

The Testing Gap: One in three private wells in the study had never been tested for water quality, leaving households unaware of issues that are inexpensive to identify but costly to ignore-despite the fact that private wells are not covered by municipal water testing.

Hard Water Cuts Appliance Life: Untreated hard water shortened the working life of water heaters, dishwashers, and washing machines by an average of 42%, as scale buildup forces equipment to work harder and fail years ahead of schedule.

Acidic Groundwater Corrodes Pipes: A significant share of wells in the region tested below neutral pH, and this naturally acidic groundwater accelerates corrosion of copper and metal plumbing, producing pinhole leaks and blue-green staining common in older regional homes.

Iron and Manganese Staining: Elevated iron and manganese-frequent in Western NY and NW PA groundwater-caused rust-colored and black staining on fixtures and laundry in roughly 4 in 10 tested wells, a cosmetic and maintenance problem that treatment resolves entirely.

Low Treatment Adoption: Only 21% of homeowners with documented water quality issues had a treatment system installed, leaving nearly 8 in 10 affected households exposed to ongoing appliance wear, plumbing damage, and reduced water quality.

Treatment Pays for Itself: Homeowners who installed appropriate treatment-softeners, filtration, or neutralizers-recovered the cost within an average of 2.4 years through lower appliance replacement, fewer plumbing repairs, and reduced soap and detergent use.
