Earth.Tattoo Launches: Leave your mark, Paint the Planet. A new interactive art project lets anyone permanently tattoo the Earth's surface - one pixel at a time

[San Francisco, Jul7 6, 2026] - Earth.Tattoo (https://earth.tattoo) today announced the public launch of its web-based collaborative art platform, where users can claim any 1 km × 1 km tile anywhere on Earth and paint it with pixel art that becomes visible to the entire world on a shared interactive globe.

The platform divides the entire surface of the Earth into approximately 510 million tiles. Each tile contains a 16×16 grid of 256 individually colorable pixels, giving artists full RGBA control (including transparency) so their designs blend seamlessly with the real map beneath them.

"We wanted to give people a sense of permanent ownership over a piece of the planet," said a spokesperson for Earth.Tattoo. "Your pixel art isn't just a post that disappears, it's tattooed onto the map."

How It Works

Every registered user receives one free tile claim per hour. Additional tiles can be purchased starting at $1, with prices doubling each time a tile changes hands. Any tile can be reclaimed by outbidding the current owner, with the previous owner's artwork preserved forever in the tile's public history.

For Artists and Collectors

The pixel editor supports freehand painting and image uploads, with client-side downsampling to the 16×16 grid. Tile owners can repaint their tiles unlimited times at no cost. A public leaderboard tracks the most prolific collectors and biggest spenders.

Known artists can also request a block of 2500 tiles to create a distinctive piece of art that is "visible from the space".
