At its core, Within the Crystal Mountain is a story of faith, purpose, and divine guidance. Through a fellowship of sympathetic characters working together against evil, Putney explores the powerful truth that life is neither random nor without meaning. The novel gently points readers toward the belief that there is One guiding the course of events, waiting to be acknowledged and followed.
Putney began writing the book during the COVID pandemic as a way to encourage his grandchildren to remain hopeful and place their trust in God. That personal inspiration gives the novel a heartfelt foundation, allowing readers to experience not only an engaging fantasy adventure, but also a deeper message of perseverance, faith, and hope.

J. L. Putney, also known as James, received his BA in Fine Art from the University of California, Northridge. He later worked as Staff Aid to the Head of Museum Operations at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and briefly taught High School English and Creative Writing at a private Christian school.
In 1978, he married his wife, Susan, and went on to build a career as an Illustrator at Lockheed Martin Aeronautics before retiring as a Systems Analyst in 2015. He and his wife currently live in Woodstock, Georgia, and have three children and five grandchildren.
With its blend of gentle fantasy, spiritual reflection, and timeless adventure, Within the Crystal Mountain speaks to readers who enjoy meaningful stories about ordinary people called into extraordinary purpose.
