Ethan LaGuardia Advocates for Student-Athlete Mental Strength and Community Leadership

The Nichols College quarterback from South Windsor, Connecticut is encouraging young athletes to focus on consistency, faith, service, and measurable personal growth both on and off the field.
College quarterback and honors student Ethan LaGuardia is speaking out about the importance of mental resilience, consistency, and community involvement among young athletes as pressure surrounding youth and college sports continues to grow nationwide.

LaGuardia, a quarterback at Nichols College and Sports Management student, says many student-athletes are facing increasing pressure to succeed athletically while also balancing academics, work responsibilities, and personal expectations. He believes developing leadership habits outside sports is becoming more important than ever.

"Success is defined as making a difference in the lives of others while living in alignment with my personal values, passions and purpose," said LaGuardia. "Sports are important to me, but so is how you treat people and how you show up every day."

According to the NCAA, fewer than 2% of college athletes go on to play professional sports, making academic preparation, leadership skills, and personal development critical for long-term success beyond athletics. At the same time, studies from the American College of Sports Medicine have shown rising levels of stress and burnout among student-athletes due to demanding schedules and performance expectations.

LaGuardia says consistency and measurable goals have helped him manage those challenges.

"I use SMART goals and firmly believe that in order to succeed you need measurable goals that you can track daily," he said. "That approach helps me stay focused during football, school, and work."

After graduating from South Windsor High School in 2023, LaGuardia attended Anna Maria College before transferring to Nichols College in fall 2025. Alongside football, he has earned academic recognition including President's List honors with a GPA above 3.85, Academic All Conference recognition, and induction into the Zeta Alpha Phi Scholastic Honor Society.

Outside athletics, LaGuardia has spent five years working for Kelman Landscape, LLC during summers and winter breaks, balancing physical labor with academics and sports responsibilities.

"Hard work will ultimately breed results," he said. "Trying to stay positive and focus on my faith helps me keep moving forward."

LaGuardia is also encouraging athletes to stay involved in their local communities. Through football programs at both Nichols College and Anna Maria College, he volunteered reading to elementary school students. He also participated in efforts to raise money for Thanksgiving meals for families in need and completed community service through the Catholic Church.

Research from the National Conference on Citizenship has shown that volunteering and civic engagement among young adults can improve leadership skills, mental well-being, and long-term career outcomes.

"Being part of a team teaches you accountability," LaGuardia said. "Community service teaches you perspective. Both matter."

LaGuardia believes one of the biggest challenges facing young athletes today is learning how to stay calm under pressure while adapting to setbacks and uncertainty.

"Staying calm under pressure and being able to shift courses quickly are huge skills," he said. "That applies in football, but it also applies in life, school, and work environments."

As part of his advocacy, LaGuardia is encouraging students, athletes, coaches, and families to focus more on long-term growth rather than short-term results. He says simple habits such as setting measurable goals, volunteering locally, supporting teammates, staying active in school, and maintaining strong routines can help young people build confidence and resilience over time.

"Consistency is key," LaGuardia said. "Committing to yourself and your future every day is what matters most."

LaGuardia also encourages young athletes to prioritize mental balance by spending time with family, staying connected to faith or personal values, and finding healthy ways to manage pressure outside competition.
