DATELINE: Manchester, UK - [June 25, 2026]

MANCHESTER, UK - Following the sudden resignation of Sir Keir Starmer, the Workers of England Union (WEU) has intensified its campaign for the establishment of devolved democratic institutions and a dedicated First Minister for England. The union argues that the persistent political instability at Westminster leaves English workers uniquely vulnerable and economically disadvantaged compared to their counterparts in the rest of the United Kingdom.

With the UK now preparing to appoint its seventh Prime Minister within a single decade, the WEU highlights this latest leadership contest as a symptom of a deeply fractured constitutional framework. Under the current system, England remains the only nation within the UK without its own devolved government, resulting in a lack of long-term planning for critical domestic issues such as public infrastructure, housing, employment legislation, and regional economic development.

The Impact on the English Workforce.

The WEU asserts that while Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland maintain national legislative continuity through their respective devolved parliaments and assemblies, England's domestic policy remains entirely hostage to the internal politics of Westminster. Every federal leadership crisis directly disrupts English public services and halts vital regional investment.

Stephen Morris, General Secretary of the Workers of England Union, issued the following statement:

"Keir Starmer's resignation is not simply another Westminster story. It is further evidence of a constitutional system that is failing England. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland all benefit from the stability of their own devolved institutions and First Ministers. England alone is expected to sit on the sidelines every time Westminster descends into another leadership contest, despite the fact that British Prime Ministerial changes primarily impact England's domestic governance.

For England's workers, this political vacuum has severe, real-world consequences. Critical investment decisions are delayed, public services face operational uncertainty, and long-term economic planning is routinely abandoned in favor of short-term political survival. This structural imbalance might have been tolerated when Prime Ministers served full terms, but it is entirely unsustainable now that Britain is facing its seventh Prime Minister in ten years. English workers deserve the same democratic representation, voice, and political stability enjoyed elsewhere in the United Kingdom. England needs its own First Minister."

Advocating for Constitutional Reform.

The Workers of England Union believes this latest political transition should serve as an urgent catalyst for comprehensive constitutional reform. The union is actively campaigning to bridge the representation gap, ensuring that the unique interests of English communities are protected from federal volatility.

By establishing a distinct English assembly or parliament, the WEU argues that the nation can achieve the policy continuity necessary to address pressing post-industrial challenges, safeguard labor rights, and rebuild public infrastructure independently of Westminster's political cycles.

About The Workers of England Union (WEU)

Established in 2009 to address a critical gap in national labor representation, the Workers of England Union is the only trade union dedicated exclusively to the rights, interests, and welfare of the English workforce. While Scotland, Wales, and the broader UK have historically maintained localized Trades Union Congress (TUC) bodies, England lacked a singular, focused voice. The WEU operates entirely independent of broader UK political agendas to provide targeted, protective advocacy, legal representation, and workplace support for employees across England.
