Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program Starts July 1 - Weight Loss Drugs Now $50/Month for Eligible Seniors

06-18-2026 10:42 AM CET | Health & Medicine

Press release from: MedicareSelfEnroll.com

Medicare GLP-1 Bridge launches July 1, 2026 - seniors can access Wegovy and Zepbound for $50/month through Medicare Part D.

Medicare GLP-1 Bridge launches July 1, 2026 - seniors can access Wegovy and Zepbound for $50/month through Medicare Part D.

Medicare seniors can access FDA-approved weight loss drugs for just $50 per month starting July 1, 2026, under the new Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program announced by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). William Vargas, a licensed Medicare insurance agent at MedicareSelfEnroll.com, is urging eligible seniors in Florida, New York, and North Carolina to verify their eligibility before the program launches in just two weeks.

This is one of the most significant expansions of Medicare coverage for seniors in recent years. For the first time, Medicare beneficiaries who struggle with obesity will have affordable, predictable access to prescription weight loss medications - the same medications that have been widely discussed for their effectiveness in helping people lose significant amounts of weight and reduce related health risks.

WHAT IS THE MEDICARE GLP-1 BRIDGE PROGRAM?

The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge is a federal demonstration program run by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). It was officially announced on May 6, 2026, and is scheduled to run from July 1, 2026 through December 31, 2027.

The program was created to fill a significant gap in Medicare coverage. Under existing law, Medicare Part D is prohibited from covering medications prescribed solely for weight loss. The GLP-1 Bridge bypasses this restriction by operating as a demonstration program outside the standard Part D benefit structure, with CMS handling claims directly through a centralized processor.

Drug manufacturers have agreed to provide covered GLP-1 medications at a net price of $245 per month supply. When a participating beneficiary fills a prescription, their pharmacy will collect a flat $50 copayment and submit the claim to CMS directly. This means the $50 copay applies regardless of which phase of the Part D benefit the beneficiary is currently in - including the coverage gap, also known as the donut hole.

Beneficiaries do not need to register or opt in to the program ahead of time. They simply need to confirm their eligibility, get a prescription from their doctor, and fill it at a participating pharmacy.

COVERED MEDICATIONS

Three GLP-1 medications are currently covered under the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge for weight management:

Wegovy (semaglutide) - available in both injectable and tablet (oral) forms. Wegovy is one of the most widely prescribed GLP-1 medications for weight loss and has strong clinical evidence supporting significant weight reduction in people with obesity.

Zepbound (tirzepatide) - covered in the KwikPen formulation only. Zepbound is a newer GLP-1 medication that has shown impressive results in clinical trials for weight management.

Foundayo (oral semaglutide) - the pill form option, which may be preferred by seniors who are uncomfortable with injections.

It is important to note that these medications are covered under the Bridge program specifically for weight reduction and maintenance. If a GLP-1 medication is prescribed for a different condition - such as Ozempic for Type 2 diabetes management, or Wegovy to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events - that prescription is handled through the standard Part D benefit, not the Bridge program. Seniors should work closely with their doctor to ensure the prescription is written appropriately for weight management.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR THE MEDICARE GLP-1 BRIDGE?

Eligibility for the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge is based on plan enrollment, body weight, and health status.

To qualify, a Medicare beneficiary must:

Be enrolled in a standalone Medicare Part D prescription drug plan (PDP) or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes prescription drug coverage (MA-PD). Beneficiaries in Special Needs Plans (SNPs), employer or union group waiver plans (EGWPs), and the Limited Income Newly Eligible Transition program (LI NET) are also eligible.

Meet one of the following clinical criteria:
- Have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 35 or higher, OR
- Have a BMI of 27 or higher AND at least one weight-related health condition, such as high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, obstructive sleep apnea, or prediabetes.

Receive a valid prescription from a licensed healthcare provider specifically for weight reduction and maintenance.

The program is available nationwide in all U.S. states and territories. Beneficiaries do not need to take any special action before July 1 - they simply need to bring their prescription to a participating pharmacy after the program launches.

WHAT SENIORS SHOULD DO RIGHT NOW

William Vargas recommends that Medicare beneficiaries take the following steps before July 1, 2026:

Step 1 - Talk to your doctor. Ask whether you meet the BMI and clinical criteria for the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge. If you do, ask your doctor to write a prescription specifically for weight reduction. The prescription must indicate weight management as the purpose in order to qualify under the Bridge program.

Step 2 - Confirm your plan participates. Contact your Medicare Part D plan or Medicare Advantage plan directly to confirm they are set up to work with the GLP-1 Bridge program. Most standalone PDPs and MA-PD plans are expected to participate, but it is worth confirming before July 1.

Step 3 - Check your pharmacy. Ask your preferred pharmacy whether they are prepared to process GLP-1 Bridge claims starting July 1. Most major chain pharmacies and independent pharmacies should be ready, but it is a good idea to confirm in advance.

Step 4 - Get free guidance from a licensed Medicare agent. If you are unsure whether your current plan qualifies, or if you want to compare Medicare plans before the next enrollment period, a licensed Medicare agent can help at no cost to you.

Step 5 - Visit MedicareSelfEnroll.com. William Vargas has published a complete guide to the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program at medicareselfenroll.com/glp1/ - covering eligibility, covered medications, how to talk to your doctor, and what to expect at the pharmacy.

STATEMENT FROM WILLIAM VARGAS

"This is genuinely significant news for Medicare seniors who have been struggling with obesity and its related health complications," said William Vargas, licensed Medicare insurance agent and founder of MedicareSelfEnroll.com.

"For years, Medicare beneficiaries watched younger patients access these medications while their own coverage left them without options. The GLP-1 Bridge changes that - but seniors need to act now. July 1 is two weeks away, and many people don't yet know this program exists or whether their current Medicare plan qualifies."

Vargas continued: "At MedicareSelfEnroll.com, we have been tracking the GLP-1 Bridge since CMS first announced it in early 2026. We encourage every Medicare beneficiary in Florida, New York, and North Carolina to speak with their doctor about whether they meet the clinical criteria, and to use our free resources to understand their options. This is not about selling anyone a new plan - this is about making sure seniors know what they are entitled to."

"Obesity is not a lifestyle choice. It is a medical condition with serious consequences for cardiovascular health, diabetes, joint health, and overall quality of life. The GLP-1 Bridge is a meaningful step toward treating it the same way Medicare treats other serious medical conditions - with access to effective, evidence-based treatments."

WHY THIS MATTERS FOR SENIORS

Obesity affects millions of Medicare beneficiaries and is directly linked to some of the most costly and serious health conditions among seniors, including Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, sleep apnea, and joint deterioration.

GLP-1 medications represent a genuine breakthrough in obesity treatment. Clinical trials have shown that medications like Wegovy and Zepbound can help people lose 15 to 20 percent or more of their body weight when combined with lifestyle changes - significantly more than any previous class of weight loss medication.

For seniors, the health implications extend beyond the scale. Weight loss achieved through GLP-1 medications has been associated with improved blood pressure, better blood sugar control, reduced cardiovascular risk, improved mobility, and in some cases reduced need for other medications.

However, until now, the cost of these medications has put them out of reach for most Medicare beneficiaries. Without insurance coverage, GLP-1 weight loss drugs can cost between $400 and $1,000 per month or more. The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge reduces that cost to a predictable $50 per month - a dramatic change that could make a real difference in the lives of eligible seniors.

ABOUT THE MEDICARE GLP-1 BRIDGE PROGRAM

The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge is a federal demonstration program established by CMS under Section 402 demonstration authority. It is a nationwide program available in all U.S. states and territories. The program runs from July 1, 2026 through December 31, 2027.

The BALANCE Model - a longer-term follow-on program that was originally scheduled to begin in January 2027 - has been delayed indefinitely by CMS as of May 2026. The GLP-1 Bridge has been extended through December 31, 2027 as a result, making it the primary access point for Medicare GLP-1 weight loss coverage for the foreseeable future.
