As Brussels Puts Open Source at the Centre of Tech Sovereignty, EU-Built Ecency Offers a Working Example

Vilnius, Lithuania - When the European Commission adopted its Tech Sovereignty Package on 3 June 2026, it named open-source software as a cornerstone of Europe's strategy to reclaim control of its digital stack. Ecency, an open-source social platform operating from Lithuania since 2016, is one example of what that strategy looks like already in use.

The Commission's package responds to a stark dependency: the EU relies on non-EU countries for more than 80 percent of its key digital products, services, infrastructure, and intellectual property. Social media sits squarely within that gap, with European users overwhelmingly served by platforms headquartered and governed outside the bloc.

Ecency takes a different shape. Incorporated in the European Union, it hosts its core infrastructure on European servers and publishes its code openly. Built on the Hive blockchain, the platform gives creators ownership of their content and a self-custody wallet, and it operates without advertising.

"Digital sovereignty isn't only about where chips are made or where governments host their data, it's about who controls the platforms where people speak," said Feruz Muradov, founder of Ecency. "We've spent nearly a decade building a social network Europeans can use without handing their identity, content, and audience to a handful of foreign companies. The infrastructure is European, the code is open, and the content belongs to the people who create it."

The platform's frontend, Vision, is itself open-source and can be self-hosted, letting communities and organisations across Europe run their own social platforms rather than depending on a single provider, a model directly in keeping with the open-source priorities Brussels set out this month.
